NFL Coach of the Year Odds Update: Shane Steichen Holds Narrow Lead
With only three weeks remaining in the regular season, clear favorites are pulling ahead for NFL hardware. For example, Brock Purdy is -200 to win the MVP award when looking at FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL award odds.
The race for Coach of the Year still lacks a clear-cut favorite, though. Three coaches seem to be ahead of the pack, as they have odds between +280 and +380. Let's look at the favorites for Coach of the Year and who could pull away in the closing weeks of the regular season.
First, check out the latest odds for the award.
Shane Steichen, Indianapolis Colts (+280)
The Indianapolis Colts' Shane Steichen holds a narrow lead for the award. The hype is certainly warranted. Think about where the Colts were a year ago; they finished 4-12-1 and averaged only 17.0 points per game (PPG) -- the second-worst mark in the league.
Under Steichen's watch, Indianapolis is in a three-way tie for first place in the AFC South with an 8-6 record. According to FanDuel's NFL divisional odds, the Colts have the second-shortest odds to win the South (+235). Making the playoffs also seems likely at -162.
The offense's turnaround has been remarkable, as they total 24.6 PPG ahead of Week 16 (eighth-best). This unit has gone through plenty of adversity, yet the offense continues to score.
Indianapolis first-round pick Anthony Richardson sustained a season-ending injury in October. Surely, the offense would struggle without its No. 4 pick. Think again. Star running back Jonathan Taylor missed the first four games of the season due to a contract holdout, as well, and he's been absent for three straight contests with a thumb injury.
Despite the various challenges, Steichen has had this unit rolling. The defense's performance has also been impressive, as it is averaging the third-most takeaways in the league.
With Taylor likely returning from injury this week, the Colts will make their final push for the AFC South. They have the 11th-easiest schedule remaining with matchups against the Houston Texans, Atlanta Falcons, and Las Vegas Raiders.
Dan Campbell, Detroit Lions (+300)
The Detroit Lions' Dan Campbell could be the safest bet for the award. Campbell has been generating Coach of the Year buzz since before the 2022-23 season.
He lived up to the hype last season, taking Detroit from 3-13-1 in 2021 to 9-8 in 2022. The Lions have taken another step in the right direction at 10-4, their first double-digit win season since 2014.
Detroit is also on the verge of winning their first NFC North title. The Lions have not won their division since 1993, and at the time, it was dubbed the NFC Central. Leading a franchise to their first divisional title in 30 years certainly screams Coach of the Year.
They are -7000 to win the division. Beating or tying with the Minnesota Vikings on Christmas Eve would secure the NFC North for Detroit. Winning the divisional crown could cause Campbell's odds to sharply drop.
DeMeco Ryans, Houston Texans (+380)
DeMeco Ryans rounds out the top three favorites. His success with the Texans is very similar to Steichen with the Colts.
The Texans have been a laughingstock for years. They failed to surpass four wins in three straight seasons from 2020-22. The head coaching spot was a constant carousel, as 2021's David Culley and 2022's Lovie Smith both lasted only one season. Finally, Houston has their man with Ryans.
His chance of winning Coach of the Year feels like a bit of a long shot, though. C.J. Stroud -- who is -6000 to win Offensive Rookie of the Year -- is in danger of missing his second straight game with a concussion.
The Texans also have the 15th-most difficult schedule remaining with games against the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, and Colts. Ryan still deserves a look with Houston at -122 to make the playoffs. Houston may need to win the AFC South (+370) for Ryan to grab the award.
Others
Following Steichen, Campbell, and Ryans, there's a sharp drop-off for Coach of the Year.
Mike McDaniel (+750) and Kyle Shanahan (+900) are in contention. The Miami Dolphins are -230 to win the AFC East. The San Francisco 49ers are contending for nearly every award as the Super Bowl favorite (+220).
Kevin Stefanski is another name to watch, as the Cleveland Browns are -850 to make the playoffs. Engineering Cleveland to a potential double-digit win season without their starting quarterback --Deshaun Watson -- is certainly an impressive feat.
The Baltimore Ravens are the second choice to win the Super Bowl at +550 and are nearly a lock to win the AFC North at -3500. This has put John Harbaugh into the award conversation, but he is a major dark horse at +2000.
Steichen, Campbell, and Ryans are the clear top choices to win. The NFL's Coach of the Year award looks to be a three-horse race with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
