NFL Betting: Who Will Record the Most Passing Yards in the Divisional Round?
Eight teams are alive in the NFL playoffs with the Divisional Round taking place this weekend. The remaining teams all rank among numberFire's top 13 adjusted offenses for the season. Seven of the eight quarterbacks who will play in the Divisional Round are also among the top nine passing yardage leaders.
In short, Saturday's and Sunday's games feature exceptional offenses with impressive QB play.
FanDuel Sportsbook -- per their NFL odds -- has answered the bell by offering odds for which quarterback will lead the Divisional Round in passing yards. There are plenty of intriguing options available. Which signal-caller will come out on top?
NFL Divisional Round Betting
Jared Goff, Detroit Lions (+380)
Jared Goff is the leader of the clubhouse for this wager at +380. However, he is not the overwhelming favorite by any means, with the top four options all carrying odds of +500 or lower.
The Detroit Lions are facing off with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. The Bucs' defense went off in the Wild Card Round, holding the Philadelphia Eagles to 9 points and 276 total yards. The run defense really shined, giving up only 2.8 yards per carry. This has been one of Tampa Bay's strengths for most of the season as they boast numberFire's third-best schedule-adjusted run defense.
This could point to the Lions' strategy for Sunday. Detroit attempts the seventh-most rushing attempts per game, but the matchup with Tampa Bay could lead to the Lions attacking more through the air. This bodes well for Goff, who is facing the 12th-worst schedule-adjusted pass defense.
With Goff posting 0.42 expected points added per drop back (EPA/DB) in the Wild Card Round, he could be poised for another big game.
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs (+470)
Without much surprise, Patrick Mahomes is one of the leaders of the list. Sunday will be unfamiliar territory, with Mahomes playing in his first career road game in the postseason, and it will be against a bitter opponent as the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are meeting for the third time in the playoffs since 2020.
If Mahomes ends up pacing the weekend in passing yards, it'll be yet another credit to his brilliance as this is a tough matchup. The Bills have the sixth-best schedule-adjusted pass defense and have not allowed 250 passing yards since Week 14's matchup against the Chiefs. When these two met in the regular season, Mahomes totaled 271 passing yards, an impressive number but one that may not be enough to lead the way in passing yards for the Divisional Round.
Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers (+470)
The San Francisco 49ers are a notable 9.5-point favorite on Saturday against the Green Bay Packers, who have the 10th-worst defensive rating and 14th-worst schedule-adjusted pass defense. Even in the Packers' 48-32 win over the Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott managed to total 403 passing yards thanks to garbage time.
Brock Purdy has the top EPA/DB on the season at 0.24. However, he may lack the volume to lead the weekend in passing yards. The 49ers attempt the sixth-most carries per game, and the Packers have the sixth-worst adjusted run defense while giving up the ninth-most rushing yards per carry. This matchup could lead to a monster outing for Christian McCaffrey, which could be useful for FanDuel's No Sweat Same Game Parlay for an NFL game on Saturday.
Baker Mayfield, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+500)
The Buccaneers-Lions clash could be the answer for picking which QB will lead the weekend in passing yards. Tampa Bay's Baker Mayfield also draws a favorable matchup against a Detroit D that ranks as the third-worst schedule-adjusted pass defense. The Lions have the worst remaining defense in the playoffs, checking in as numberFire's eighth-worst unit.
Mayfield has been red-hot, averaging 289.4 passing yards with a clip of 0.20 EPA/DB over his last five games. With the Bucs totaling 26.2 points per game in the previous six games, Mayfield and company could be bound for success against a stumbling Lions defense.
Others
C.J. Stroud (+600) and Jordan Love (+650) could be popular longshot picks as both young QBs come into the Divisional Round after sparkling performances in their postseason debuts. However, both signal-callers are facing difficult defenses.
Stroud will tangle with the Baltimore Ravens, a team that leads the league in defensive rating and in schedule-adjusted pass defense. The 49ers are not much easier for Love as they boast the fifth-best pass defense. Love could be a sneaky good pick if you think the Packers get into a hole and have to air it out.
Josh Allen (+1200) and Lamar Jackson (+1500) are far behind the pack. Allen goes up against the Chiefs' second-ranked pass defense, and Jackson has reached 300 passing yards on only two occasions over his last nine outings. Plus, Baltimore attempts the most runs per game in the league and is a sizable favorite over Houston.
Ultimately, the passing yardage leader this weekend could come from the Bucs-Lions matchup -- which has the second-highest total of the week at 48.5.
