NBA Betting Picks for Tuesday 1/30/24: Will the Knicks Stay Hot Against the Visiting Jazz?

The 82-game NBA regular season offers us a wide variety of betting options, including point spreads, moneylines, and totals. The Association features 1,230 regular season games, which can make sifting through the odds an overwhelming task.

However, various advanced statistics can help narrow the choices. numberFire's NBA power rankings and daily projections paired with advanced stats from the NBA can help give the inside track to winning big.

While utilizing some of the mentioned tools, which NBA odds from FanDuel Sportsbook look like the best bets today?

NBA Best Bets

Los Angeles Lakers at Atlanta Hawks

Lakers +5 (-110)

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to be up and down, going 5-5 over their last 10 games. Their third game of a six-game road trip takes place tonight against the Atlanta Hawks. This is a more favorable matchup for Los Angeles as Atlanta ranks 24th in numberFire's power rankings compared to recent opponents like the Houston Rockets (12th) and Golden State Warriors (18th).

numberFire's game projections are suggesting to take the Lakers to cover the five-point spread as underdogs. Let's fact check that pick, though. Could L.A. cover their third game in four?

The Lakers' offense has enjoyed a lot of success over their last five games at 131.0 points per game (PPG) compared to their season average of 116.2 PPG (14th-most). The Hawks have the fourth-worst defensive rating in the Association, presenting Los Angeles' offense with another opportunity to shine.

Per usual, the Lakers will likely lean on their paint attack as they attempt the fewest threes per game while totaling the third-most points in the paint. Sweat could be rolling down coach Quin Snyder's temple as this spells trouble for Atlanta; the Hawks give up the fourth-most points in the paint per contest while having the second-worst mark in opponent two-point percentage. Clint Capela (120.8 defensive rating) could be outmatched against Anthony Davis (24.9 PPG).

While Los Angeles seems to have enough for the cover, it could be wise to avoid the Lakers moneyline (+164), for they are 7-16 on the road and give up the third-most three-point attempts per game while the Hawks attempt the seventh-most each contest.

Utah Jazz at New York Knicks

Knicks -4.5 (-106)
Over 229 (-110)

The longest win streak in the NBA belongs to the New York Knicks, who have won seven straight games. Backing the Knicks' side has also produced as New York is 6-1 against the spread (ATS) during the streak.

The Utah Jazz could be the next team on the chopping block. numberFire's projections are leaning toward another Knicks cover, and I agree with this pick for several reasons.

Most importantly, the Jazz defense could be outmatched. They have the eighth-worst defensive rating while New York has the eighth-best offensive rating. The Knicks' offense has been especially rolling over the last three games with 120.0 PPG while shooting 52.3% from the field and 40.7% from three.

Utah has the 12th-worst mark in opponent effective field goal percentage (eFG%) and the 11th-worst mark in field goal percentage (FG%). Slowing New York's three-point barrage could be atop the Jazz's list of worries as they give up the sixth-most three-point attempts per game and the third-most makes each contest. Meanwhile, the Knicks average the 10th-most converted threes per game while holding the 11th-best three-point percentage.

The rebounding battle could also lean in New York's favor, for they lead the NBA in offensive rebounding percentage. Utah has the 13th-worst defensive rebounding percentage. Extra possessions for the Knicks' red-hot offense could ensure the point spread cover.

When looking at the total, it's easy to peek at the over. While New York's defense has been terrific, holding opponents to only 98.7 PPG during the seven-game winning streak, they have rarely faced an offense on the Jazz's level during the stretch.

Utah's offense has slowly but surely climbed the ranks over the last month with the 15th-best offensive rating. The Denver Nuggets were the only opponent with a top-15 offense that the Knicks have faced over the last seven games. The defense was excellent, limiting Denver to only 84 points with a 40.5 FG%. However, the Nuggets' style of play is a stark contrast to the Jazz. Denver plays at the third-slowest pace while Utah has the eighth-quickest tempo.

The Jazz will likely look to push the pace and get more shot attempts than the Nuggets were able to muster. It's also important to consider Utah's recent production, which is 128.3 PPG over the past 10 contests. Unlike Denver, the Jazz also have the tools to take advantage of perhaps New York's biggest weakness on defense -- defending the three. The Knicks dodged that bullet with the Nuggets, who attempt the third-fewest threes in the league. Utah is the complete opposite, shooting the 10th-most three-pointers per game. Additionally, the Jazz have shot better than 40.0% from beyond the arc in two of the last three games.

Considering New York's matchup with a weak defense and Utah's three-point shooting, going over 229 points feels very reasonable.
