MLB SGP Bets

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs

Sonny Gray 7+ Strikeouts (+136)
Willson Contreras To Record 2+ Bases (-110)
Under 8.0 Runs (-114)

Combined Odds: +632

Sonny Gray is one of the best punchout aces in the league, shining with a 30.6% K% (5th-best in MLB) and recording 11.14 strikeouts per nine innings.

He's reached 7-plus strikeouts in 9 out of 19 starts (47.3%), but these +136 odds imply just a 42.4% probability. I see the value in the alt market, especially since the opposing Chicago Cubs are striking out at a 23.8% rate (10th-highest) against righties and rank 20th in wOBA (.302 wOBA).

Willson Contreras has been swinging a hot bat, so let's invite him to this SGP party. Across the last 30 days of play, Contreras has produced a 14.3% barrel rate, 55.6% hard-hit rate, and .255 ISO.

He mashes left-handed pitchers with a .314 BA, .588 SLG, and 188 wRC+. I like his chances to notch a pair of bases against lefty Shota Imanaga, a fly-ball pitcher who allows a .399 SLG and 1.24 homers per nine to righties.

Contreras is in a good spot to rake, but I still like the under for this game.

We've touched on Gray's dominance and how he could fare against a weak Chicago lineup. Imanaga has also been excellent with a 2.95 ERA, 3.47 xERA, and 3.79 xFIP. Although Contreras has a friendly matchup, the Cardinals -- as a whole -- should struggle at the plate. They come in with a .282 wOBA (29th) versus lefties.

Save for Contreras, let's look for a quiet night at the plate from these teams.

Miami Marlins at Atlanta Braves

Charlie Morton Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-132)
Austin Riley To Record 2+ Bases (-115)
Braves -1.5 (+100)

Combined Odds: +439

The Marlins are producing a .292 wOBA (28th) against right-handed pitchers and dealt key bats at the trade deadline, including Jazz Chisholm, Bryan De La Cruz, and Josh Bell. Miami also strikes out a 23.0% rate (13th) versus righties.

Righty Charlie Morton owns a 3.32 ERA and 4.02 xFIP at home. He also has a 23.2% K%. He's faced six teams that rank in the top half of K% and bottom half of wOBA against righties. In this split, he exceeded 5.5 Ks in all but one game. I like him to deal in this matchup against Miami.

Let's tack on Austin Riley to this SGP. He's been smashing to the tune of a 20.6% barrel rate, 60.3% hard-hit rate, 49.2% fly-ball rate, and .247 ISO across the last 30 days of play. He'll go up against Max Meyer, who has been acceptable for the Marlins but has allowed righties to go 16-for-55 at the plate in his two-year career, including 10 extra-base hits.

Morton is set up for success at home against a weak Marlins lineup. Miami's bullpen is meh (22nd in xFIP and 24th in SIERA), so Atlanta's bats should be able to piece together a fine day at the plate. With that, let's look for the Braves to cover the run line, too.

Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers

Bobby Witt Jr. To Record An RBI (+115)
Seth Lugo 5+ Strikeouts (+108)
Royals Moneyline (-154)

Combined Odds: +450

Bobby Witt Jr. has been dominating with a 14.6% barrel rate, 46.3% fly-ball rate, and .344 ISO across the last 30 days of play. He also owns a .345 BA (best in MLB), .597 SLG (5th-best in MLB), and a 45.5% fly-ball rate versus right-handed pitchers.

I like his chances to knock in a run against the right-handed Keider Montero of the Detroit Tigers. Montero has struggled with a 5.35 xERA through seven starts in the majors and has given up a whopping six home runs across his last three starts. He's allowed righties to record 12 extra-base hits through just 65 at-bats.

Witt has knocked in 76 runs (sixth-most in MLB) through 109 games.

Let's stick with the Royals and add Seth Lugo's strikeout prop to this SGP.

Lugo enters the night with a 2.66 ERA (third-best in MLB), 3.95 xERA, 3.76 xFIP, and 3.88 SIERA. Though one of the top-performing pitchers in the league, Lugo doesn't necessarily make his name on strikeouts. He sports a fair 21.8% K%.

However, Lugo has exemplified a very high strikeout ceiling at times. He's punched out 8 or more batters in 7 starts and recorded 10 or more strikeouts in 3 outings. There is a correlation here that has me excited about this matchup.

Detroit comes in with a .297 wOBA (24th) and 24.0% K% (7th) versus righties. They're weak against this handedness and strike out at a pretty high rate.

In Lugo's last 17 starts, he has faced 11 teams that own a 23.0% K% or higher versus righties. He exceeded 5.5 strikeouts in 7 out of 11 of those starts, missing by the hook twice.

A pitcher who touts the third-best ERA (2.66 ERA) in the majors is facing an offense that struggles with a .297 wOBA against his handedness. Lugo is primed to silence Detroit, and Kansas City's Witt-led offense can make their mark opposite Montero. In turn, let's cap off this Same Game Parlay by adding Kansas City's moneyline to the equation.
