Matt Painter: "This Is Zach Edey's Last Season at Purdue."
Zach Edey is weeks away from becoming the first player in college basketball to win National Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons since Ralph Sampson did it at Virginia in the early 1980s.
And despite Edey having an additional year of eligibility due to COVID, Purdue coach Matt Painter said this week on the College Hoops Today Podcast that this will be Edey's final year at Purdue.
"This is his final year at Purdue," Painter said in reference to the 7-foot-4 Edey, who's averaging 23.7 points and 11.8 rebounds.
With NIL now a prominent factor in college sports, many players are now opting to stay in school for as long as possible unless they have a lucrative professional opportunity.
That won't be the case with Edey.
Purdue is currently 25-3 and ranked second in this week's ROTHSTEIN 45. Per the college basketball odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, the Boilers own +170 odds to make the Final Four and +750 odds to win the national championship -- both of which rank as third-best.
