Angels Analysis
The obvious difference between this season's Angels and the 2023 team is the lack of Shohei Ohtani.
Having such a unique player is great, but they become very hard to replace. Ohtani had a 6.6 WAR last season as a hitter and 2.4 as a pitcher. That was the most for a hitter on the team, and he only finished second as a pitcher because he was shut down from throwing after August 23rd.
Ohtani wasn't the only player they lost, as players like Gio Urshela, Eduardo Escobar, Aaron Loup, and Randal Grichuk are also no longer with the team.
The Angels made some moves in the offseason to help improve their immediate future, signing Robert Stephenson, Aaron Hicks and Zach Plesac. However, these guys are unlikely to move the needle.
There was also a managerial change for the club. In comes Ron Washington as the team's skipper, replacing Phil Nevin. Washington hasn't managed since 2014 and is also unlikely to make a huge difference for the team.
The good news is that they should get more than 82 games out of Mike Trout this season, which obviously helps. However, the Angels were still a below-average team with Trout and Ohtani for years, so it probably won't push them toward the playoffs even if Trout is healthy this season.
On the bright side, the Angels don't have the worst odds to win their own division, as that would go to the Oakland Athletics.
