Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl History

At long last, Super Bowl LVIII is just a few days away.

With the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs embarking on "Fabulous" Las Vegas, the big game is on the horizon. As such, all the stars will be on hand in "Sin City."

For Sunday's title clash, San Francisco is a 2.5-point favorite over Kansas City in a game with a 47.5-point total, per FanDuel Sportsbook.

Last month, I authored an article on what San Francisco would need to do to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Additionally, I took a look last week at which X-factors Kansas City would have to emphasize in order to win back-to-back titles -- a feat no NFL team has accomplished since Tom Brady's New England Patriots of 2004-05.

Sunday's epic showdown in Southern Nevada is looming closely. Before the big game, let us have a look back the Chiefs' complete Super Bowl history.

Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl History

Candidly, the Chiefs had next-to-no modern Super Bowl experience prior to quarterback Patrick Mahomes' arrival. Still, an entire era of struggles has been subverted in the past half decade. Since 2018, K.C. has gone to six consecutive AFC conference title bids, punching their big-game ticket on four occasions through that span.

Most of us are familiar with Kansas City's recent dominance under Mahomes, superstar tight end Travis Kelce, and head coach Andy Reid. However, prior to this century, the Chiefs had only appeared in the Super Bowl twice. Respectfully, Lyndon B. Johnson was in the Oval Office for the earlier of those two games while Richard Nixon served during the latter.

Still, there is a reason why names like Len Dawson and Hank Stram still pop up in NFL lore. Unfortunately, Kansas City experienced dark days on the gridiron after those men departed. Between 1972 and 1993, the Chiefs were unable to win a single AFC West crown. Fast-forward to the present, and K.C. has snapped off eight-straight division titles (which is the second-longest streak in NFL history).

Starting from most recent to least, here is a reflection of Kansas City's history in the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl LVII (2022-23)

Kansas City 38, Philadelphia 35 (W)

We need only look back one year to survey the Chiefs' last Super Bowl.

As the current defending champions, K.C. outlasted the Philadelphia Eagles in an instant classic. That February 2023 meeting took place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ. Of course, we saw nine combined touchdowns scored here, which was one shy of the Super Bowl record. The Birds took a 27-21 lead into 4Q before Mahomes tossed two touchdowns in the final period. Jalen Hurts and Philly responded with a late TD of their own, but K.C. would have the last laugh.

To seal the deal, kicker Harrison Butker knocked through a 27-yard field goal to take a 38-35 lead with just seconds remaining. That score would hold to go final, giving this current Kansas City regime a second ring through a four-year span while simultaneously awarding Mahomes his second SB MVP.

Super Bowl LV (2020-21)

Tampa Bay 31, Kansas City 9 (L)

In a game that also served as Tom Brady's 10th and final Super Bowl appearance, the Chiefs' most recent attempt at winning back-to-back Lombardi Trophies fell short.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense was sure to harass Mahomes early and often, sacking him thrice while forcing two interceptions. Of course, the Bucs had the coincidental advantage of playing this Super Bowl in their home venue of Raymond James Stadium (with COVID restricting the crowd size to under 25,000). Brady was also vintage Tom "Terrific" in this bid, completing 21 of 29 passes for 201 yards and three scores.

Additionally, this left Brady with a notable upper-hand on Mahomes; TB12 was the opposing quarterback in Mahomes' first regular season loss, first playoff loss, and first Super Bowl loss.

Super Bowl LIV (2019-20)

Kansas City 31, San Francisco 20 (W)

As alluded to, the Chiefs and 49ers have rumbled for all the marbles once before.

Just four years ago in Miami, Kansas City used a second-half comeback effort to steal the title from San Francisco (led then by quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo). This contest was tied at 10 heading into halftime. Coming back out of the locker rooms, S.F. managed to produce a field goal followed by a touchdown to go up 20-10, but that would be all from the Niners. In the game's final quarter, Mahomes orchestrated three scoring drives, tossing touchdowns to Kelce and tailback Damien Williams.

From there, it was Williams' 38-yard rushing score with under two minutes to play that provided the dagger. With a 31-20 victory, Kansas City was on top of the football world for the first time since 1970.

Super Bowl IV (1969-70)

Kansas City 23, Minnesota 7 (W)

The Chiefs' inaugural Super Bowl win came in the 1969-70 NFL season, which was just after the United States landed Neil Armstrong on the moon. For Super Bowl IV, Kansas City traveled to New Orleans to take on the heavily favored Minnesota Vikings. Pitting head coaches Hank Stram and Bud Grant against one another, K.C. used stifling defense along with timely quarterback play from Len Dawson to produce the upset.

Of course, the future Pro Football Hall-of-Famer would be named SB MVP in this bid, as Dawson missed on only five passes that day at the Louisiana Superdome. To complete the effort, the Chiefs picked off three different passes from the Vikings.

Chiefs Kingdom did not know it then, but this would be the franchise's high point of the century.

Super Bowl I (1966-67)

Green Bay 35, Kansas City 10 (L)

As the game that set the tone for the modern Super Bowl, the "First AFL-NFL World Championship Game" featured Kansas City taking on Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Pack entered this contest as a two-touchdown favorite versus K.C., and G.B. did well to deliver on that.

The first half of Super Bowl I was a tight competition (which led to Dawson's iconic cigarette photo at halftime), but Green Bay blanked the Chiefs in quarters three and four. By game's end, the Bart Starr-to-Max McGee connection proved too potent; the former was named game MVP while the latter produced 138 receiving yards with two scores.

Head coach Stram and Kansas City eventually lost 35-10, but, as alluded to, they came back for the title just three years later.
