Houston Astros Odds to Win the World Series

Winning games and making deep playoff runs have become a common theme for the Houston Astros in recent years. In each of the last seven seasons, the Astros have either advanced to the American League Championship Series (ALCS) or they have won -- or lost -- the World Series.

Ahead of the 2024 MLB season, it is no surprise that the Astros are considered one of the top contenders in all of baseball once again. Houston is listed at +700 odds to win the World Series, via the World Series odds on FanDuel Sportsbook. Those are the third-best odds.

With expectations through the roof entering this season, can the Astros secure their third championship in the last eight years? Let's take a look at Houston's betting odds, projections, and discuss their outlook for the 2024 campaign.

Astros Analysis

The Astros tallied a 90-72 record in 2023 after recording 95-plus wins in each of their previous two seasons. Nevertheless, Houston defeated the Minnesota Twins in the American League Division Series (ALDS) in four games before being eliminated by the Texas Rangers in seven games during the ALCS.

Since the end of last season, manager Dusty Baker has retired and been replaced by Joe Espada, who spent nine seasons in the minors before beginning his coaching career. Espada has been the bench coach for the Astros since 2018, so he isn't a stranger to the team's current roster.

Not many teams deploy a deeper lineup than the Astros, which is led by Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Yordan Alvarez, and Kyle Tucker. Throughout the 2023 season, Houston had the sixth-best slugging percentage (.437), the seventh-most home runs (222), and the fifth-best weighted on-base average (wOBA; .332) while striking out at the third-lowest rate (19.8%) in the league.

In the pitching department, the Astros were a middle-of-the-pack squad, producing the 15th-best skill interactive earned run average (SIERA; 4.16). The rotation and bullpen also combined for the 14th-best WHIP (1.28) and the eighth-best strikeout rate (23.9%).

During the offseason, Houston's bullpen has lost Hector Neris, Phil Maton, and Ryne Stanek. At the same time, the Astros notably signed Josh Hader to a five-year, $95 million contract in hopes to give them a reliable closer to end games.

The Astros also handed a five-year, $125 million extension to Altuve, keeping him with the club through his age-39 season. The rest of the roster is mainly the same from a season ago, but it remains to be seen if Justin Verlander will be ready for Opening Day due to a shoulder issue.

While Altuve and Bregman are the veteran leaders in the lineup, big things are expected from Alvarez and Tucker this season. Alvarez owns the fourth-shortest odds (+950) and Tucker has the sixth-shortest odds (+1500) to win the AL MVP in 2024.

Additionally, Framber Valdez is tied for the third-shortest AL Cy Young odds (+1000).

Given the depth of their bats, Houston's success is largely dependent on the health of its rotation and bullpen. Barring a serious injury to one of -- or multiple -- marquee players, the Astros appear to be primed for another postseason push that could end in yet another World Series victory.
