Verdict

Aussie pin-up horse LEAP TO FAME (8) was beaten but very brave in Tuesday's NZ Cup, doing plenty of work when racing parked throughout and fighting on well for second. Draws wide but he'll be pushing forward and he knows how to work and win. Can remind us all of his class today. REPUBLICAN PARTY (7) led at a strong pace on Tuesday and while he couldn't hold them off he didn't give up. He was flying with three wins of the trot prior including the Ashburton Flying Stakes from this barrier two back. Can bounce back. MERLIN (10) loomed as a danger in the straight in the NZ Cup and although he couldn't catch the Aussies he kept chasing to place. May need luck from the back row but his strike rate at this circuit and distance is 50 per cent including a win in this race last year. FRANCO SINATRA (1) steps up to the big guns but took his record at this venue and distance to five from 10 with Tuesday's Junior FFA win. Could be competitive from the inside draw.
