SINGLE RED (10) was showing potential at the trials before finishing a sound runner-up as the favourite at Tauranga 2 weeks ago. Se has trialled on this course in the past, and only needs some luck from a wide gate to be hard to beat. MISISSIPI GAMBLER (6) fought on gamely when finishing third on debut at New Plymouth nearly 3 weeks ago, beaten by a head. She won't have to improve by much to get the job done here. CHICA (13) looked to be in need of her debut run at Matamata after showing talent in her lead-up trials. The extra furlong will help her, and from a handy gate, she will be a quick improver. HAIKU (14) won a trial before having not much luck on debut at Arawa Park 6 weeks ago. A wide gate is no help, but she has the scope to pick up a win in the near future. VAN PELT (8) has each-way claims at a price.
