CHECKMATE (4) finished a close fifth in the G3 Aotearoa Classic over 1m at Ellerslie last time out, beaten by just 2 lengths. He is perfectly placed back in this class, and in his first run on his home track, he is the one to beat for us. ZANTABULOUS (10) continues to race well, winning at Te Aroha two starts back before a strong second over 1m at this track a fortnight. The in-form Hayley Hassman reunites, and with her 4lbs claim, he is weighted to be very hard to beat. POSITIVITY (2) hasn't raced since finishing ninth in the Matriarch Stakes at Flemington in November. She might need the run, but her class will take her a long way. Top 3 value. TAKESHI (6) was unsuited to racing in front at Ellerslie 4 weeks ago, and with a quieter ride early on this time, he is worth another chance. Include.

Claiming Race

A race in which horses are entered for a certain price, or claiming tag, which is also their sales price. An owner can claim any horse entered for the tag before the race begins, and owns them as soon as the gates open.

A wet racetrack condition, typically with a firm base and water settling on top.

Main Track Only

A horse entered for main track only (MTO) is one hoping the weather forecast or track conditions will move the race off the turf course and onto the main track. They are scratched the morning of the race if the conditions stay dry.
