Parker Messick and Hagen Smith are slated to start today’s game.

Messick was the Cleveland Guardians‘ Game 1 starter, and he ended the regular season with a 25.8% strikeout rate and 3.51 SIERA. He had a lot of success at Rate Field this year, posting a 2.45 ERA, 18 strikeouts and two walks in 14 2/3 innings in the split. Once Messick leaves the game, he’ll hand it over to a Cleveland bullpen that ranked sixth in xFIP in the regular season.

The Chicago White Sox‘s pitching situation isn’t as clean. Smith is serving as an opener for the third time in this postseason. He was excellent as a reliever in the regular season, recording a 3.07 SIERA and 37.3% strikeout rate in 28 MLB innings, so he’s plenty capable of missing bats. But he also walks a lot of hitters, too, posting an 18.5% walk rate in the playoffs after generating a 14.5% walk rate in the regular season.

While it’s a bit of a guessing game as to what the White Sox will do after Smith, my assumption is that they’ll try to piece it together with a handful of relievers, and that should be an advantage for Cleveland as Chicago’s bullpen had the 10th-worst reliever xFIP this campaign.

With Messick giving Cleveland a sizable edge on the mound, I’m willing to back the Guards to win as a small favorite.

Jo Adell to Record 2+ Hits/Runs/RBI (-110)

Through three playoff games this year, Jo Adell is sporting a 53.8% K rate, which isn’t ideal. But he’s also got three hits and four RBI while serving as Cleveland’s cleanup hitter, and I think he’ll notch at least two H/R/RBI today.

Adell is good against southpaws, producing a .411 wOBA, 40.6% hard-hit rate and 42.1% fly-ball rate with the platoon advantage in 2026. That makes Smith a friendly matchup for him.

After that, we can’t predict the pitcher matchups for Adell. However, with Adell’s position in the lineup, he’s in a good spot for RBI and run-scoring chances, and he has the power to take advantage of it. He recorded at least two H/R/RBI in three straight games to end the regular season and has done so in two of the first three games of this series.

MLB Betting Frequently Asked Questions

What are MLB player prop bets?

MLB player prop bets are wagers on specific statistical outcomes tied to individual players during a game — not on which team wins or loses. You might bet on how many strikeouts a starting pitcher records, whether a shortstop gets a hit, or how many total bases an outfielder accumulates.

Because they are isolated to a single player's performance, props let you apply focused knowledge about matchups, recent form, and ballpark conditions rather than predicting the full game result.

What types of MLB player props are available?

FanDuel offers a wide menu of MLB props. The most common categories include:

  • Pitcher strikeouts
  • Batter hits
  • Home runs
  • Total bases
  • RBIs
  • Stolen bases
  • Pitcher outs recorded

How do MLB player prop bet odds work?

MLB prop odds use the standard American (moneyline) format. A negative number shows how much you must wager to profit $100. A positive number shows how much a $100 bet returns in profit.

  • -110 odds — bet $110 to win $100
  • +130 odds — bet $100 to win $130
  • -200 odds — bet $200 to win $100

What does "total bases" mean as a prop bet?

The total bases prop counts the bases a batter earns from hits in a single game:

  • Single = 1 base
  • Double = 2 bases
  • Triple = 3 bases
  • Home run = 4 bases

Walks, hit-by-pitches, and stolen bases do not count. A typical total bases line is set at 1.5 or 2.5. Betting over 1.5 means you need at least a double, or two singles.
