Green Bay Packers Draft Oregon State TE Luke Musgrave 42nd Overall

The Green Bay Packers are embarking on a new era with Jordan Love under center, and they gave him a new toy, selecting tight end Luke Musgrave 42nd overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Luke Musgrave's NFL Draft Profile

Musgrave played more than six games in only one college season, and he was able to play just two games in 2022 due to injury. He balled out in those two games, though, going for 169 yards and a touchdown on 11 receptions.

His combination of speed and athleticism is awfully appealing and should help him produce at the NFL level, as long as he can stay healthy.

NFL Next Gen Stats' model ranks Musgrave third in overall score among tight ends in this class as well as fourth in athleticism score.

Luke Musgrave's Top Comparables

According to Brandon Gdula's NFL prospect database -- which accounts for athleticism, production, size, draft capital, age, and more historically important variables -- here are Musgrave's top five comparable players.

  1. Cole Kmet - 88.3%
  2. David Njoku - 87.6%
  3. Kahale Warring - 85.1%
  4. Noah Fant - 84.3%
  5. Brenton Strange - 84.1%

Luke Musgrave in Green Bay

In 2022, Green Bay ended the year ranked 12th in adjusted Net Expected Points per play by numberFire's expected points model, although they'll obviously be without Aaron Rodgers this coming season.

While rookie tight ends typically don't do too much, this is a quality landing spot for Musgrave as Josiah Deguara is the incumbent number-one tight end for the Packers. However, we should always tread lightly with first-year tight ends.

Green Bay Packers 2023 Outlook

The Packers' regular season win total number is set at 7.5 with -124 odds on the under, according to FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds.

They're +410 to win the NFC North, which makes them the biggest longshot in the division, and they're +4000 to win the Super Bowl.
