Fantasy Football: 3 Players You Can Drop After Week 3

Players to Drop at a Glance

  • Courtland Sutton, WR, Broncos
  • Tyler Allgeier, RB, Cardinals
  • Kyle Pitts, TE, Falcons

Every week, basically every fantasy website in the industry puts out a waiver wire column. But in some instances, the real problem isn't deciding who to pick up — it's figuring out which players to part ways with.

Knowing when to drop an under-performing player is a tough call, but I'm here to help you out.

After this past week, here are some players you can drop and why.

Fantasy Football Drop Candidates

Courtland Sutton, WR, Broncos

Rostered in 79% of Yahoo leagues, Courtland Sutton is becoming a difficult hold, especially in shallower leagues.

Through three games, Sutton has seen 16 targets, which he’s turned into only eight catches for 82 yards. He’s yet to score more than 7.6 PPR points in any game, and I don’t have much optimism that Sutton’s output is going to trend up.

The Denver Broncos‘ offense hasn’t looked good this season despite heating up in the second half of Week 3, and although Sutton leads Denver’s WRs in snaps, the Broncos have a lot of quality options at receiver, including newcomer Jaylen Waddle, who has handled 17 targets across the past two weeks.

It all adds up to Sutton being a low-upside bench piece who is a fine cut candidate if there is a waiver wire pickup you crave.

Tyler Allgeier, RB, Cardinals

Well, RIP to the days of Tyler Allgeier getting more snaps than Jeremiyah Love.

Love had his breakout game in Week 3, and with how good Love is, I don’t know how the Arizona Cardinals can put the toothpaste back in the tube now.

Love played 43% and 40% of the snaps the first two weeks. That number jumped to 64% in Week 3, and Love garnered a whopping 21 carries and five targets.

If anything, there’s still room for Love’s snap rate to grow, which relegates Allgeier — who is rostered in 43% of Yahoo leagues — to handcuff duties. You can make a case for holding Allgeier, but that’s not something I’d be going out of my way to do.

Kyle Pitts, TE, Falcons

Kyle Pitts has generated just two catches for 20 yards on six targets this season. He hasn’t played more than 63% of the snaps in any game this year.

Big yikes.

He’s running well behind both Drake London and Bijan Robinson in terms of the Atlanta Falcons‘ pass-game targets, and tight end has been sneaky deep this year.

I see no reason to roster Pitts. To be honest, it’s a little baffling that he’s rostered in 86% of Yahoo leagues. I’m expecting that number to fall after this week’s waiver run.

Fantasy Football Players to Drop FAQ

When should you drop a player in fantasy football?

A player can become droppable when his role, workload, or opportunity has significantly declined and there are better options available on the waiver wire. Injuries and depth-chart changes can also quickly alter a player's fantasy value.

How long should you wait before dropping an underperforming player?

It depends on the player's draft capital and underlying usage. Early-round picks usually deserve more patience, while late-round players with declining snaps, targets, or touches can be moved on from much sooner.

Should you drop an injured player in fantasy football?

Not necessarily. Consider the severity of the injury, expected recovery timeline, and whether your league has an injured reserve spot before making a decision. High-upside players are often worth holding if their absence is expected to be temporary.

Should you drop a player for a waiver-wire pickup?

Yes, if the waiver option has a better path to consistent touches, targets, or playing time. Fantasy managers shouldn't hold onto a struggling player simply because they used a draft pick on him.

What should you look at before dropping a fantasy football player?

Snap rate, touches, targets, depth-chart position, injuries, upcoming matchups, and changes in a team's offense can all help determine whether a player is worth holding or dropping.
