MLB DFS Picks

Pitcher Breakdown

We've got a pretty stout pitching slate with the likes of Corbin Burnes ($10,700), Dylan Cease ($10,900), Taj Bradley ($10,100) and Max Scherzer ($9,300) going today.

At the top, it's a tough call between Cease (at Washington Nationals) and Burnes (at Miami Marlins), but I side with Cease for due to strikeout upside. Cease is -128 to go over 6.5 Ks, per the MLB odds on FanDuel Sportsbook. Burnes is +120 to go over 6.5 strikeouts. Cease owns a 32.5% K rate and 14.6% swinging-strike rate. Burnes is at a 23.4% strikeout rate and 13.0% swinging-strike rate.

While Scherzer gets a delightful matchup with the Chicago White Sox and is firmly in play, Bradley is my preference after Cease and Burnes. He's at the Toronto Blue Jays and has been excellent through 75 1/3 frames this season, pitching to a 3.35 SIERA and 29.8% K rate. Our MLB DFS projections have Bradley as the slate's top point-per-dollar arm.

Also, don't sleep on Gavin Williams ($7,500), whose salary is very enticing. He faces a Detroit Tigers offense that has been hot lately but has struggled versus righties overall this year with the 22nd-best wOBA (.301) and 9th-highest K rate (23.9%).

Stacks to Target

  • Baltimore Orioles (5.14 implied total) -- Slate's top implied total and an obvious stacking candidate versus Roddery Munoz. Getting to the O's top bats likely requires using a value arm, but we have some quality low-salary pitchers to pick from. Only negative is Baltimore will surely be chalk.
  • San Diego Padres (5.06) -- Padres torched a lefty yesterday and get Patrick Corbin today. However, I will likely be underweight on them, assuming they'll be popular, as the Padres are just 21st in wOBA versus left-handers for the season (.305).
  • Texas Rangers (4.75) -- Texas is at home versus Jonathan Cannon. Cannon hasn't been that bad (4.23 SIERA) and limits hard contact well (30.3% hard-hit rate). With that said, he's been blitzed by lefties (.382 wOBA and 2.08 homers per nine), and Texas has some really good left-handed sluggers.
  • Los Angeles Dodgers (4.52) -- The combination of a tough matchup with Logan Webb and other high-salary offenses being in better spots could lead to the Dodgers going a little overlooked. It's rare that's ever the case, and it makes them appealing if you can find the salary for LA's top bats.
