Pitcher Breakdown

Today is a rare day where the field should concentrate heavily around a budget arm.

That's Blake Snell ($8,100). The San Francisco Giants will play in 59-degree weather today in the Bay Area, and he's got a stellar 3.51 xERA entering a date with the toothless Colorado Rockies. Colorado sports a 69 wRC+ and league-high 30.2% strikeout rate against lefties in the past 30 days, and Snell's 25.9% K rate against them would be in play at a five-digit salary. I'm starting nowhere else in cash games.

On the other end of the weather spectrum is Shota Imanaga ($9,800); extremely favorable hitting weather is really his one true drawback. Imanaga's 25.5% strikeout rate is tremendous when set to face a Kansas City Royals club with a mediocre .665 team OPS against lefties in the past 30 days.

Bryan Woo ($9,000) of the Seattle Mariners is another option. He'll take on the reeling Chicago White Sox. Woo's xERA (2.51), expected batting average against (.220 xBA), barrel rate (2.7%), and hard-hit rate allowed (34.9%) are all 75th percentile or better across MLB entering a matchup with a team that -- above all other measures of ineptitude -- have failed to score three runs in over 45% of their games this season.

With Erick Fedde ($9,500) and Brandon Pfaadt ($9,300) also set for home dates with bottom-10 teams against righties (by wRC+ or team OPS), there is no shortage of tremendous pitching on this slate below $10,000. That does make finding stacks a bit dicier, though.

Stacks to Target

  • New York Yankees (4.63 implied team total)
    • As a slight underdog, the Yanks' offensive potential might be a bit undersold against Kutter Crawford. Crawford's 48.0% flyball and 9.6% barrel rates allowed are a cocktail for home runs, and Boston's bullpen has been atrocious over the past month (4.62 xFIP). Plenty of salary for Aaron Judge and Juan Soto with our pitchers, too.
  • Houston Astros (4.59)
    • Without a doubt my favorite stack today. Justin Wrobleski's 4.40 ERA is nothing short of wizardry when also offering a 5.27 xERA with massive flyball (59.0%), hard-hit (42.5%), and barrel (17.5%) rates behind it. L.A.'s bullpen (4.43 xFIP in the last 30) isn't much better than Boston's.
  • Los Angeles Angels (4.39)
    • This is just the Halos' "normal bad" split rather than "unpassable" against lefties, so they can still dent Mitch Spence and a weak Oakland reliever group. Spence's low strikeout rate (20.0%) and high rate of hard contact (42.3%) are key reasons why he's surrendered 12 earned in his past three outings.
  • Washington Nationals (3.95)
    • Washington's .710 OPS against righties in the past month isn't special, but I just want to keep stacking against Kyle Gibson every five days. Gibson's 4.81 xERA, .266 xBA, 9.5% walk rate, and 9.4% barrel rate are all 35th percentile or worse across baseball. The bottom of this order is soft, but Juan Yepez, Jesse Winker, and C.J. Abrams are still performing well versus right-handers.
