FanDuel Daily Fantasy Baseball World Series Helper: Rangers at Diamondbacks, Game 4

The Texas Rangers squeaked out the win on Monday and will look to take a commanding series lead in Game 4. Can the Arizona Diamondbacks even things up?

For those unfamiliar with the single-game daily fantasy baseball format, scoring is identical to its full roster cousin, except you only roster hitters, and lineups consist of five flex spots. The one twist? One of the five roster spots is your designated "MVP," who receives twice his total fantasy points, along with a "STAR" slot that gets 1.5 times the points. Naturally, it's crucial that you choose your MVP and STAR carefully if you want to be at the top of the leaderboards when it's all said and done.

On that note, let's highlight some of the top options for today's FanDuel single-game slate.

Pitching Breakdown

We're expecting what boils down to a duel of bullpens tonight. Andrew Heaney will likely have a short leash for the Rangers, while Joe Mantiply will serve as an opener for Arizona.

Heaney has always been a shaky pitcher to rely upon, and his 2023 postseason hasn't exactly inspired confidence. Across six innings (four appearances), the southpaw has generated just one strikeout (3.7% rate) while allowing four earned runs.

Based on prior usage, we're likely to see right-hander Dane Dunning follow Heaney, and he hasn't been much better. Dunning has also given up four earned runs over six innings (four appearances), and while he's also tallied five strikeouts (17.9%), it's come alongside five walks.

Both pitchers had their moments during the regular season, but Heaney ultimately finished with a 4.40 SIERA, and Dunning was at 4.52.

None of that sounds great for Texas, but the Arizona side also comes with question marks. Although Mantiply will presumably go just one inning, the lefty has a lackluster 18.5% strikeout rate and 11.1% walk rate in the playoffs and was mediocre during the regular season. When he made a start in the NLCS, the bullpen would ultimately allow five runs (four earned).

At the end of the day, while it's tough to target individual matchups on a night when these teams will be cycling through pitchers, the advantage should fall on the hitting side for both.

Slate Strategy

Postseason hero Adolis Garcia ($9,500) would be among the top MVP/STAR options tonight as usual, but after leaving yesterday's game with a side injury, chances are he's out for at least one game.

That should lead the masses to Corey Seager ($8,500) as the chalk multiplier option. Seager is arguably the best all-around hitter in the series, and he's slugged home runs in three of the last four games. Unsurprisingly, he has the shortest odds to hit a dinger, per the MLB odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.

Among the Rangers, the next-best odds to hit a home run belong to Mitch Garver ($7,500), Josh Jung ($5,500), and Marcus Semien ($7,000). Jung hasn't had a big performance in this series yet, but he's produced a 50.0% hard-hit rate in the postseason and is a great value at his salary. While we're still waiting for a ceiling game from Semien, he does have a five-game hit streak going.

Nathaniel Lowe ($6,000) continues to be an intriguing play; his 18.4% barrel rate is third-best on the team behind Seager and Garcia. Evan Carter ($7,500) might not start against the lefty opener, but could enter the game quickly as a pinch hitter if you're willing to roll the dice.

Garcia's likely absence figures to increase the MVP/STAR roster percentages of Arizona's Corbin Carroll ($9,000) and Ketel Marte ($8,000), too. On paper, the lefty-lefty matchup against Heaney isn't great for Carroll, but Heaney was actually pretty ineffective in same-handed matchups this year (5.22 xFIP).

Marte is tied with Christian Walker ($7,000) for the game's second-shortest home run odds behind Seager. In the playoffs, Walker has the D-backs' highest barrel rate (20.0%) and second-highest hard-hit rate (54.3%). Somehow still stuck on one home run, he's one of my favorite MVP/STARs at what should be modest popularity.

Gabriel Moreno ($5,500) remains low-salaried despite hitting third. Tommy Pham ($7,500) has come alive at the plate, slugging a home run or multiple hits in four of the last five games.
