Lions Analysis

The Lions are spearheaded by a top-tier offense, ranking in the top five in both rushing and passing, per numberFire's schedule-adjusted metrics.

Jared Goff has been superb again in 2023, checking in seventh in adjusted net yards per pass attempt (6.99) after ranking fourth in that stat in 2022. In addition to quality QB play, the Lions boast a sturdy offensive line -- paced by First-Team All-Pro Penei Sewell -- and a bevy of talented skill-position players, including Amon-Ra St. Brown, another First-Team All-Pro performer.

The problems for Detroit come on the other side of the ball. numberFire's metrics rank the Lions just 27th in overall D, including 30th against the pass -- although the Lions are 8th-best versus the run. We saw this play out in both of Detroit's playoff wins as the Lions got torched by Matthew Stafford (367 yards and 2 scores) and Baker Mayfield (349 yards and 2 TDs).

Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers' arsenal of pass-game weapons will put the Lions' pass defense to the test this week in the NFC Championship. The Lions are listed as 6.5-point road underdogs, and if they're going to pull the upset, they'll likely need their pass defense to play one of its better games of the campaign.
