Dallas Cowboys Draft Michigan TE Luke Schoonmaker 58th Overall

The run on tight ends continued in Friday night's second round as the Dallas Cowboys took Michigan's Luke Schoonmaker with the 58th overall pick.

Schoonmaker becomes the fourth tight end taken in the second round and the fifth tight end overall in the draft.

Luke Schoonmaker NFL Draft Profile

Schoonmaker didn't put up big numbers in college, which isn't all that rare for a tight-end prospect. He recorded just one season of more than 20 catches and 200 receiving yards, and it came in 2022, his final year, when he totaled 35 receptions for 418 yards.

PlayerProfiler gives him just a 43rd-percentile college dominator rating.

NFL Next Gen Stats' prospect model hands Schoonmaker the fifth-best athleticism score among this year's tight ends and ranks him eighth at the position in terms of overall score.

Luke Schoonmaker in Dallas

Schoonmaker is joining one of the NFL's better offenses as Dallas finished 2022 ranked eighth in adjusted Net Expected Points per play by numberFire's expected points model.

Dallas lost Dalton Schultz this offseason, so Schoonmaker's biggest competition for playing time is likely to be Peyton Hendershot and Jake Ferguson.

All in all, it's a pretty nice landing spot for Schoonmaker. Despite that, tight ends rarely make a big impact in Year 1, so we should temper our immediate expectations.

Dallas Cowboys 2023 Outlook
