Daily Strikeout Leader: Which Pitcher Will Rack Up the Most Strikeouts on Monday?

Each day on FanDuel Sportsbook, there is no shortage of MLB odds to sift through, and you're likely familiar with a lot of them. That includes strikeout props, which are entertaining because they add importance to each pitch.

FanDuel Sportsbook has cranked that up a few notches with its daily strikeout leader market. Not only do you need your hurler to rack up Ks -- you need them to get more punchouts than any of the day's other starting pitchers.

Here are today's odds in that market. We'll also reference our MLB projections, which are powered by numberFire.

MLB Daily Strikeout Leader

The Top Tier

There are four hurlers with odds at +750 or shorter in this market -- Garrett Crochet (+350), Cole Ragans (+500), Taj Bradley (+500) and Freddy Peralta (+750).

All four have elite punchout potential. Given the odds and matchups, I prefer to side with Ragans' +500 odds to lead the day in strikeouts, although Crochet being the favorite despite facing the Los Angeles Dodgers tells you how much the market values his K ceiling.

Ragans hosts the Miami Marlins. Miami is right around the MLB average for strikeout rate against southpaws (21.3%), but Ragans isn't your average lefty.

On the season, Ragans owns a 28.9% K rate and 14.3% swinging-strike rate. He's also been a better strikeout pitcher at home (31.8% K rate) than in his travels (25.6%).

All in all, he's followed up his excellent end-of-year run from 2023 with a superb start to 2024. Among the top options, Ragans is where I land. Our projections agree as we have Ragans forecasted for a Monday-best 8.2 Ks.

Digger Deeper

Aaron Nola (+1200) and Justin Steele (+1900) stand out among those with longer odds.

Nola definitely checks the matchup box as he gets the Detroit Tigers, the team with the sixth-highest strikeout rate versus righties (24.3%). It's at Comerica, too, which is a big park factor boost for Nola.

The reason Nola is at longer odds is that he's not generating strikeouts like he usually does, with his K rate (22.5%) and swinging-strike rate (9.6%) at their lowest levels since his rookie season. Still, I don't mind throwing a dart at Nola given the sublime matchup.

Steele gets a difficult matchup against the San Francisco Giants. San Fran has been tough on lefties, with the 11th-lowest K rate (20.5%) in the split along with the 8th-best wOBA (.330).

But Steele displayed good strikeout upside in 2023, finishing with a 24.6% strikeout rate and 11.6% swinging-strike rate. He's rounding into form this year after dealing with injuries, racking up a 26.3% K rate across his past three starts. He's put up single-game K totals of eight and seven in that time.

One Long Shot

Bryan Woo is listed at +3400 odds to lead the night in Ks, and he's a longshot for a reason as his strikeout rate is at just 18.4% so far this season.

But these odds may be a little too long.

Woo had much better strikeout numbers in 2023, recording a 25.1% K rate and 12.5% swinging-strike rate. So, in short, he might have more in the tank than what we've seen thus far in 2024.

The Tampa Bay Rays are a decent matchup, as well. The Rays carry the 11th-highest strikeout rate against right-handers (23.6%) and are 24th in wOBA (.297) in the split.
