Daily Strikeout Leader: Can Freddy Peralta Emerge From a Loaded Field?
Each day on FanDuel Sportsbook, there is no shortage of MLB odds to sift through, and you're likely familiar with a lot of them. That includes strikeout props, which are entertaining because they add importance to each pitch.
FanDuel Sportsbook has cranked that up a few notches with its daily strikeout leader market. Not only do you need your hurler to rack up Ks -- you need them to get more punchouts than any of the day's other starting pitchers.
Here are today's odds in that market. We'll also reference our MLB projections, which are powered by numberFire.
Pitcher | FanDuel Sportsbook Odds | Starts | Ks in Starts | K/Start | K% | CSW% |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Garrett Crochet | +300 | 19 | 146 | 7.7 | 34.8% | 30.9% |
Cole Ragans | +380 | 19 | 134 | 7.1 | 29.7% | 29.5% |
Joe Ryan | +550 | 18 | 118 | 6.6 | 27.2% | 29.3% |
Tarik Skubal | +800 | 18 | 132 | 7.3 | 30.5% | 33.0% |
Sean Manaea | +900 | 17 | 87 | 5.1 | 23.3% | 25.5% |
Freddy Peralta | +1000 | 18 | 124 | 6.9 | 30.3% | 28.0% |
Sonny Gray | +1300 | 16 | 115 | 7.2 | 31.1% | 30.2% |
MLB Daily Strikeout Leader
The Two Favorites
Garrett Crochet (+300) and Cole Ragans (+380) are the night's two favorites, and both are in sublime matchups.
Ragans gets a solid Boston Red Sox lineup, but it's a Boston offense that owns MLB's highest strikeout rate against southpaws (29.2%). The upside is obvious for Ragans, who has pitched to a 29.7% K rate and 14.8% swinging-strike rate.
Crochet is deserving of his short odds, too. He'll see the Pittsburgh Pirates, the offense with the fifth-highest strikeout rate against left-handers (24.7%) along with the 10th-worst wOBA (.302). Crochet has been special in 2024, thriving to the tune of a 2.50 SIERA, 34.8% K rate and 15.6% swinging-strike rate.
While it's easy to make a case for both Crochet and Ragans, these odds are pretty short, and there are some other high-upside hurlers going tonight. I'll likely pass on these aces.
An Intriguing Second Tier
Joe Ryan (+550), Tarik Skubal (+800), Sean Manaea (+900), Freddy Peralta (+1000) and Sonny Gray (+1300) all carry odds between +550 and +1300). In my eyes, this tier is the sweet spot, and I particularly like Peralta and Skubal.
Skubal is taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Earlier this season, that would've been a non-starter in this market for any pitcher, but the current LA lineup isn't that fearsome. Aaron Nola just fanned nine Dodgers last night, and Skubal has been excellent in 2024, recording a 30.5% K rate and 15.3% swinging-strike rate. He's racked up double-digit punchouts in three starts this season, including a whopping 13 last time out at Cincy.
Peralta is a little bit of a leap of faith due to a middling matchup with the Washington Nationals, a team that generally avoids strikeouts pretty well. But we know what kind of upside Peralta brings to the table. He's the owner of a 30.3% strikeout rate and 15.0% swinging-strike rate this campaign and has twice amassed 11 Ks in an outing. Our MLB projections have Peralta forecasted for a Friday-best 7.7 strikeouts.
Dart Throws
With so many top-notch arms going tonight, it's going to be tough for any of the longshots to prevail in this market.
With that said, I can stomach Taj Bradley (+2500) in a date with the Cleveland Guardians. Cleveland is a brutal matchup for Ks as they have the second-lowest strikeout rate versus right-handers (18.6%), which is why Bradley is at these long odds. But Bradley can miss bats as he's sporting a 30.6% strikeout rate and 13.2% swinging-strike rate. He's a bet-on-talent dart throw.
