Daily Strikeout Leader: Can Bryce Miller or Anyone Else Top Spencer Strider?

Subscribe to our newsletter

Each day on FanDuel Sportsbook, there is no shortage of MLB odds to sift through, and you're likely familiar with a lot of them. That includes strikeout props, which are entertaining because they add importance to each pitch.

FanDuel Sportsbook has cranked that up a few notches with its daily strikeout leader market. Not only do you need your guys to rack up Ks -- you need them to get more punchouts than any of the day's other starting pitchers.

Here are today's odds in that market.

Pitcher
FanDuel Sportsbook Odds
Spencer Strider+260
Dylan Cease+500
Gerrit Cole+750
Brandon Pfaadt+1300
Kodai Senga+1700
Brandon Woodruff+1700
Bryce Miller+1700

The Deserving Favorite

If Spencer Strider (+260) pitches on one of the days this market is offered (Tuesdays and Fridays), he's going to be the betting favorite.

Strider is just that today for a date with the San Francisco Giants. It's a matchup that only enhances Strider's sky-high K upside as the Giants own the fifth-highest strikeout rate (24.7%) versus right-handers.

With a silly 38.2% strikeout rate and 19.5% swinging-strike rate, Strider has punched out at least nine in nine of his past 11 starts. He faced these same Giants last time out and struck out 10.

Even though +260 is a pretty short number for a market like this one, Strider is still awfully enticing.

The Next Tier

While Strider deserves to be the favorite, there are two pitchers in the tier below him -- Dylan Cease (+500) and Gerrit Cole (+750) -- who have top-notch strikeout ability when they're on.

Between the two, I much prefer Cease due to the matchups. Cease is at home against the Oakland Athletics, and it's a much softer spot than Cole's clash with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Oakland sports the third-highest K rate (25.1%) versus righties, and while Cease hasn't been at his best in 2023, he's still got a 26.7% strikeout rate and 13.7% swinging-strike rate. Cease has flashed his elite stuff on a few occasions, fanning at least nine in four of his last 12 starts. He'll need that kind of strikeout output to cash in this market, and he's plenty capable of it versus the A's.

The Longer Shots

With Cease and Strider in smash spots, it's a tough night for long shots, but among the arms at +1700 or higher, Bryce Miller (+1700) stands out to me.

The Seattle Mariners' righty has a solid 11.5% swinging-strike rate and draws a nice matchup with the Kansas City Royals, an offense with the fifth-worst wOBA (.300) against righties. That gives Miller a chance to work deep into the game, and he struck out 10 just three starts ago.

I don't mind Braxton Garrett (+2400), either. He gets the Washington Nationals, and it's not as good of a matchup as you might think. It's actually a pretty brutal one. The Nats have the lowest K rate (18.5%) versus southpaws along with the seventh-best wOBA (.334) in the split.

However, Garrett can miss bats, recording a 24.9% strikeout rate and 12.9% swinging-strike rate. He struck out eight Nats in his lone meeting with them this season. Garrett should at least be on our radar.
