College Football Win Total Betting: Will Oklahoma Get to 8 Wins in Year 1 in the SEC?

With action on the diamond and hardwood taking over the airwaves, college football will be (temporarily) put on the back burner. However, for those gridiron fans who want to get ahead of the game, FanDuel Sportsbook has gone live with 2024 college football win totals!

For head coach Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners, they will be entering an indefinite new era. Notably, Oklahoma has long been a flagship university of the Big 12. Going forward, OU will compete in the Southeastern Conference, which is largely considered the premier college football grouping.

Of course, the Sooners will not be making that conference transition alone. They say great things come in pairs, and with that, the Texas Longhorns are also moving from the Big 12 to the SEC.

As an elephant in the room, quarterback Dillon Gabriel recently transferred out of Norman, electing instead to play for the Oregon Ducks. Incidentally, that lines up sophomore Jackson Arnold to take the snaps for the Sooners in 2024.

Let's dive into Oklahoma's upcoming regular-season win total odds at FanDuel Sportsbook and take a look at both perspectives -- the over and the under. As you'd imagine, "Boomer Sooner" will see an increase in competition upon entering the SEC.

Why Oklahoma Could Win Over 7.5 Games (-105)

Off the bat, it jumps out that OU has a win total of only 7.5 games. To compound interest, Oklahoma currently carries short -105 odds to go over the set total. Still, is that feasible with improved football programs coming their way?

If the Sooners are to win eight or more regular season games in 2024 (which incidentally affords just four losses), they'll need to start hot. They'll have a solid shot to commence the campaign with a 3-0 record. Out of the gate, OU plays the Temple Owls, Houston Cougars and Tulane Green Wave.

Oklahoma will officially begin conference play on September 21st versus the Tennessee Volunteers. That game will take place in Norman, but the Vols will be no slouch. According to ESPN's College Football Power Index, OU (20.7 FPI) is positioned just seven spots ahead of Tennessee (16.0 FPI). It is a game the Sooners can win, and genuinely, the contest against Josh Heupel's Volunteers could swing this win-total market.

With four games completed, Oklahoma will be hoping to have Arnold comfortable in his QB1 role. To aid Arnold's efforts, 6-foot-4 receiver Nic Anderson is a reliable target on the outside. In 2023, Anderson scored 10 touchdowns for OU while averaging 21.0 yards per reception.

If the Sooners can enter the annual Red River Rivalry (Oct. 12) at 5-0, they will be in a solid position to go over FanDuel Sportsbook's win total of 7.5 games. Even if they lose to UT at the Cotton Bowl (Texas is an early 9.5-point favorite versus OU), three wins through Oklahoma's final six games is absolutely possible.

Why Oklahoma Could Win Under 7.5 Games (-115)

Truth be told, it does seem more likely that the Sooners will win seven or fewer games throughout the upcoming campaign, which is why the under is currently listed with -115 odds (or 53.5% implied probability).

If OU is to fall short of eight regular-season wins, at least one of these things will have happened: Oklahoma enters the rivalry game against the Longhorns with two prior losses or they are simply engulfed by SEC talent over the final five weeks. So, yes, as alluded to, it will be especially key for the Sooners to defeat Tennessee at home as well as downing the Auburn Tigers (Sep. 28) on the road.

Per ESPN's post-Spring SP+ rankings, OU is slotted 16th in FBS on defense. Still, they have quite the gauntlet of explosive offenses -- and teams in general -- throughout four of their final five games.

On October 26th, the Sooners will head to Oxford for a romp with the Mississippi Rebels (35.1 PPG in 2023). OU will get a break by hosting Maine (FCS) one week later, but from there, it is into the shredder.

Oklahoma closes 2024 with consecutive contests versus the Missouri Tigers (in Columbia), Alabama Crimson Tide and LSU Tigers (in Baton Rouge). Transparently, I'd be surprised if the Sooners won any one of those bids within that concluding trifecta. Basically, OU may need to steal a victory against Texas or Ole Miss -- neither win will come easy.
