College Football Picks and Predictions
East Carolina vs. Alabama (noon ET)
Alabama -28.5 (+100)
Spread
The Alabama Crimson Tide are lopsided favorites against the East Carolina Pirates. Alabama went 9-6 against the spread last season and covered both of its games when favored by at least 27.5 points. East Carolina went 8-5 ATS a year ago.
The biggest reason I’m backing Alabama is the amount of turnover on the Pirates' offense. East Carolina lost quarterback Katin Houser, its top two rushers and four of its five leading receivers from last season, leaving the program with significant questions heading into a difficult matchup at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama's defense allowed just 297 yards and 19.2 points per game last season, giving the Tide a major advantage against an offense that is breaking in so many new pieces.
Alabama has questions of its own, particularly with Keelon Russell making his first collegiate start and an overhauled offensive line in front of him. Still, the combination of Alabama's defensive talent, home-field advantage and East Carolina's offensive turnover gives me enough confidence to back the Tide.
Boise State vs. Oregon (3:30 p.m. ET)
Oregon -24.5 (-110)
Spread
The Oregon Ducks enter the season ranked No. 2 nationally and gets a significant early test against the Boise State Broncos, but the matchup looks favorable for the Ducks at home.
Oregon went 8-7 ATS last season and was 3-3 ATS when favored by at least 24.5 points, so there is certainly some risk in laying this many points. However, the Ducks return quarterback Dante Moore — a guy on the shortlist to be the first pick in the 2027 NFL Draft — and enter the season with one of the strongest rosters in the country.
Boise State, meanwhile, is expected to rely heavily on its rushing attack, but its passing game and inexperienced offensive line could have a lot of problems against Oregon's defensive front.
Boise State went 8-5-1 ATS last season, so this isn't a matchup where I'm expecting the Broncos to simply disappear. But Oregon's combination of offensive firepower, defensive talent and home-field advantage should eventually create separation. I expect the Ducks to get enough explosive plays to cover.
Western Michigan vs. Michigan (7 p.m. ET)
Western Michigan +27.5 (-105)
Spread
This is my favorite underdog play of the day as I think the Western Michigan Broncos have enough offensive continuity and defensive talent to keep this game within four touchdowns.
Western Michigan went 11-3 ATS last season, making the Broncos one of the best ATS teams in the nation in 2025. They also return quarterback Broc Lowry and running back Jalen Buckley, giving them a proven foundation on offense. Lowry threw for 1,803 yards and rushed for 963 yards with 14 rushing touchdowns last season, while Buckley topped 1,000 rushing yards and scored nine touchdowns.
The Michigan Wolverines‘ talent advantage is obvious, but the Wolverines went just 4-9 ATS last season and were only 1-1 when favored by at least 27.5 points. Western Michigan's defense was also dang good last year, ranking 23rd nationally in adjusted pass-success defense.
Michigan should win, but I like the Broncos to keep this within three touchdowns.
