Today’s Best College Football Predictions, Picks (Saturday)
Iowa -1.5 (-115)
Wisconsin at Iowa — 12:00 p.m. ET
Spread
The Iowa Hawkeyes have leaned heavily on their defense, and that unit has been among the best in the country. Iowa is allowing just 14.3 points and 281.3 total yards per game while surrendering only 82.9 rushing yards per contest, the fifth-best mark in the FBS.
That could create problems for a Wisconsin Badgers offense averaging only 330.1 total yards per game. Wisconsin has been solid on the ground at 150.7 yards per game, but that strength runs directly into the best part of Iowa's defense.
The Hawkeyes' own offense is unlikely to light up a Wisconsin defense allowing 15.3 points per game, which makes this a game where field position and a handful of high-leverage possessions should matter.
With Iowa playing at Kinnick Stadium and needing to win by just two to cover, I'll back the Hawkeyes.
Georgia -12.5 (-110)
Florida vs. Georgia — 3:30 p.m. ET
Spread
The Florida Gators have been one of the SEC's more interesting and unpredictable teams this season, but this is a difficult matchup for the Gators.
The Georgia Bulldogs enter the weekend averaging 43.0 points per game while allowing only 15.9, giving them one of the largest scoring differentials in the country. Georgia is also 5-2 against the spread this season.
Florida has shown significant offensive upside, but the defense has been much less dependable. Florida is surrendering 28.3 points per game, and we've already seen the Gators give up 45 points to Missouri and 38 to South Carolina in SEC play.
Georgia's combination of offensive firepower and defensive consistency gives it multiple paths to create separation. I prefer the UGA side of the spread.
Utah -7.5 (-110)
Utah at Cincinnati — 3:45 p.m. ET
Spread
This spread has moved through a key number, but I'm still willing to side with the Utah Utes.
The Utes are 7-0 and have paired a productive offense with one of the nation's stingiest defenses. Utah is averaging 37.4 points per game while allowing only 14.6, and the Utes have covered six of their first seven games.
The Cincinnati Bearcats can score — they're averaging 35.4 points per game — but their defense is allowing 26.4 points per outing. That's a sizable mismatch against a Utah team that has been able to win games with either its offense or defense.
Utah also enters this matchup with an excellent defensive profile against the run, and that should make it difficult for Cincinnati to consistently stay ahead of the sticks.
Utah's overall advantage is still enough for me to lay the points with the Utes.
Miami -14.5 (-105)
Miami at North Carolina — 7:30 p.m. ET
Spread
We'll head to the night slate for the final bet and back the nation's No. 1 team.
The Miami Hurricanes have been dominant through seven games. Miami is scoring 49.0 points per game while giving up only 15.3, and the Hurricanes rank first nationally in scoring while sitting near the top of the country in total offense.
Miami has been rolling against ACC competition. The Hurricanes beat Clemson 41-13, Florida State 43-35, and Pittsburgh 52-23 in their past three conference games, and they're 5-2 against the spread overall. Outside of a wild rivalry game versus FSU, the ‘Canes have overpowered conference foes.
The North Carolina Tar Heels are averaging only 24.4 points and 335.7 total yards per game. That makes it difficult to envision UNC’s offense keeping pace if Miami gets into the 30s or 40s, especially considering the Hurricanes' defense has allowed just 15.3 points per game.
While winning by at least 15 on the road against a decent team is a big ask, Miami's enormous offensive advantage gives it the ceiling to pull away.
