College Basketball Final Four Odds
Purdue Boilermakers
To no one's surprise, the No. 1 Purdue Boilermakers lead the pack. Purdue is 5-0 against nationally ranked opponents, including victories against Arizona, Marquette, Gonzaga, Illinois, and Tennessee.
Purdue ranks third on KenPom's college basketball ratings and has the second-best adjusted offensive efficiency.
Zach Edey, the reigning National Player of the Year, is shining in his senior season -- averaging 21.8 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game. He's joined by a Boilermaker team that touts the 12th-best three-point shooting percentage in all of college basketball. A 7'4 star paired with sharpshooting guards should prove to be unforgiving to opponents come tourney time.
With that said, coach Matt Painter and the Boilermakers have consistently dropped the ball when it matters most in recent years. Purdue has made eight straight NCAA Tournament appearances. They've been bounced in the first round in half of those bids, including an infamous first-round loss last year as the No. 1 seed.
Time will tell whether this Purdue team is legit enough to punch the Boilers' first ticket to the Final Four since 1980.
Arizona Wildcats
Purdue isn't the only team to have shown disheartening efforts in last season's Big Dance. The Arizona Wildcats -- currently ranked eighth -- were knocked out of last year's first round as a No. 2 seed, but they seem primed to change the narrative.
Arizona isn't short on impressive wins this season. They've pulled off victories against Duke, Wisconsin, and Michigan State. According to Bart Torvik, the Wildcats have the second-best adjusted defensive efficiency and sixth-best adjusted offensive efficiency, with their overall power rating sitting third among all teams.
At the moment, I'm quite high on Arizona making it far in the NCAA Tournament. Not only do they have one of the best defenses in basketball, but they also have a roster made up of experienced veterans. Four members of their starting lineup are in their senior year, including transfer guard Caleb Love (17.7 points per game), who has given this team a much-needed offensive boost.
While the NCAA Tournament is notoriously fickle, I'll always feel comfortable siding with a stellar defensive team that doesn't rely on a one-and-done star.
Houston Cougars
The No. 2 Houston Cougars lost their first game of the year this past Tuesday. After starting the season with 14 straight wins, the Iowa State Cyclones got the better of the Cougars in a 57-53 victory earlier this week.
It'd be dramatic to sound any alarms, but it is important to note that Houston has yet to face a nationally ranked opponent -- and Iowa State (14th on Bart Torvik) was their toughest competition yet.
While a win over a more legitimate foe would be encouraging, we should still trust Houston. There's little doubt they have the best defense in all of college basketball. They rank first in adjusted defensive efficiency on both KenPom and BartTorvik as well as numberFire. Add in that they are allowing just 50.3 points per game (fewest by a margin of 6.8 points), and it becomes quite clear that we can trust the Cougars' defense.
Transfer guard L.J. Cryer (16.3 points per game) has given Houston a major boost on the offensive end, so it seems they have all the fixings to be a major threat come March. With seven currently ranked opponents coming up on their schedule, Houston has a lot cut out for them and will have a chance to make some noise in the next two months.
Connecticut Huskies
The reigning NCAA Tournament Champions are showing no signs of stopping. The No. 4 Connecticut Huskies have pulled off wins against ranked teams such as Gonzaga, North Carolina, and Texas. They lost a nail-biter to the Kansas Jayhawks, but it's hard to watch this 14-2 Huskies team and question their legitimacy.
UConn's depth is perhaps their most threatening quality. Four players on their team are averaging at least 13.9 points per game, and that's not even including freshmen NBA draft prospect Stephon Castle, who leads all UConn guards with a 53.6% field-goal percentage and is a lockdown defender.
Their championship pedigree paired with rising young stars makes them a team to watch this March. UConn has the pieces to get back to another Final Four.
