Chris Olave Has Fantasy Star Potential in His Second Season
There is a lot of hype for wide receivers this year -- whether it's guaranteed studs, potential breakouts, or sleepers.
Chris Olave deserves some of that attention. He's got a new quarterback and all the talent to make plenty of noise after his productive rookie campaign.
Here's a look at Olave's fantasy football projections and outlook for the season.

Chris Olave Fantasy Football Outlook
Impressive Rookie Campaign
Despite an uninspiring quarterback situation, Olave performed well last season.
The New Orleans Saints went to Andy Dalton at QB for the majority of their 2022 season, and he wasn't lighting things up. Thankfully, Olave was.
In his first professional season, the Ohio State product showed flashes of greatness as he finished the year with 72 receptions for 1,042 receiving yards and four touchdowns. It was a dynamite first season, especially given the overall woes of the Saints' offense.
Olave finished as the half-PPR WR25, playing 15 games to put together 162.2 fantasy points and an average of 10.8 half-PPR points per game.
The Saints' wideout had 29 deep targets, the fourth-most among all receivers in 2022. His average depth of target (aDOT) was the ninth-highest (14.0 yards), showing that even with limits at the quarterback position, Olave was still able to produce, and that should only get better in Year 2 with a new QB in town.
New QB in Town
Derek Carr to the rescue.
After a falling out with the Las Vegas Raiders, Carr was released and able to pick his new team this offseason. He chose the Saints, and the chance to play with a young stud like Olave probably factored into that decision.
Carr isn't an elite passer, but he can get the job done and is likely an upgrade on what the Saints had under center in Olave's debut season. The Saints' new signal-caller had 3,522 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in 15 games during 2022.
Anyway, this isn't about how you feel about Carr; it's about how you should feel about Carr passing to Olave. The answer? You should feel pretty good.
Carr isn't afraid to feed his No. 1 option, and it has led to fantasy success for those wideouts, especially over the last four years. And Olave is the No. 1 receiver for the Saints, even with Michael Thomas back -- let's get that out of the way right now.
Year | Player | Points | Positional Ranking |
---|---|---|---|
2019 | Darren Waller | 176.0 | TE3 |
2020 | Darren Waller | 225.1 | TE2 |
2021 | Hunter Renfrow | 207.6 | WR11 |
2022 | Davante Adams | 285.5 | WR3 |
Now, I'm not saying Olave is going to be Davante Adams this season, but I am saying he has a chance to take a second-year leap.
Carr is someone who likes to air it out -- his 72 deep ball attempts ranked fifth in the NFL last season. Seeing how great Olave is at getting down the field and making things happen, that stat alone should have you intrigued about Olave's upside in 2023.
It's going to be a star-level year.
Final Verdict: Sky Is the Limit
Olave has dynamic ability as a pass catcher, and you're rightfully seeing that in his 2023 projections across the fantasy industry. He has some positive touchdown regression heading his way, too, after a four-score year in 2022, with numberFire's model projecting Olave for seven touchdowns this season en route to a WR12 finish.
Per FantasyPros, Olave has an average draft position (ADP) of 27.3 overall and is going as the WR13, following the likes of DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. In FanDuel best-ball drafts, Olave is valued above those two players, as he's the WR11 off the board with a 25.6 ADP.
Everything is in place for Olave to make the leap to being a star in his sophomore season. You don't want to miss out on that. Olave is a third-round pick who you can select with confidence.
