BMW Championship Info, Key Stats, and Course Form: The Final 50 Remain
It's that week.
The week when we can use the word "penultimate" when describing a PGA Tour event.
The BMW Championship is the penultimate event on the PGA Tour schedule before next week's TOUR Championship.
The top 50 in the FedExCup rankings earned the right to tee it up this week with the top 30 advancing to East Lake next week.
There is only one prior (recent and relevant) event at this course -- Olympia Fields -- for us to dig into.
What should we know about the course, and who played well in 2020?

Olympia Fields Course Key Stats
The one tournament at Olympia Fields tells us that driving distance is more important than average (and Jon Rahm beat Dustin Johnson in a playoff in 2020, so that part checks out), but unsurprisingly, strokes gained: approach remains the keyest (most key?) of all the stats.
Historically, there's a strong correlation between strokes gained: approach and green size, and the greens this week average around 87% compared to the Tour average.
Olympia Fields was the toughest course relative to par on Tour in 2020, and a lack of par 5 opportunities is a big reason for it.
Both par 5s are more than 600 yards. The fairways are tight, on average, and missed fairways are penalizing.
Statistically, everything is just relentless about this place, really. Greens are hard to hit, and lag putting is tough, too.
I love it.
This will put an emphasis on overall ability, which is why strokes gained: total can be the best route overall this week and why we probably don't need to complicate this one with a lot of granular stats.
