3 MLB FanDuel Value Plays for Wednesday 8/2/23

Finding low-salary production is one way to get a leg up on the competition in MLB DFS.

On the heels of yesterday's 2023 MLB trade deadline, here are some value plays to target on FanDuel for Wednesday's main slate.

Advanced statistics courtesy of FanGraphs.

Tony Gonsolin, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers ($8,400)

In a rematch of the 1988 World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers will host the Oakland Athletics tonight. In the second tilt of a three-game set, the Boys in Blue are coming off a 7-3 victory over Oakland on Tuesday.

Tony Gonsolin will toe the rubber for Los Angeles tonight. In 2023, his 7.40 strikeouts per 9 innings is respectable and could translate well in a home game -- where Gonsolin's K-BB rate is 2.47, versus 1.72 on the road -- against the A's. Remember: Oakland has scored less frequently than any club in baseball this year at 3.61 runs per game.

Against a frustrated Athletics side, Gonsolin is projected to produce 25.2 points in DFS tonight, according to numberFire. In relation to his modest salary, that results in a value score of 3.82 (second-best among pitchers in that category) on Wednesday.

Over his past four starts, Gonsolin has averaged 21.5 points on FanDuel. For only $8,400, that is decent production, and if you're looking for a value arm, he's a fine play.

Seiya Suzuki, OF, Chicago Cubs ($2,800)

As my colleague Scott Edwards Jr. has alluded to, the Chicago Cubs are in an advantageous spot tonight against the Cincinnati Reds. Listed at a frugal salary, Seiya Suzuki shows fantastic value in the matchup.

numberFire sees Suzuki contributing 12.8 FanDuel points on Wednesday, which is quite solid for an outfielder salaried at $2,800 -- Suzuki's 4.56 value score is the second-highest clip among all available batters. Additionally, the Cubbies show a run total projection of 5.42, per numberFire, which is tops among all teams on tonight's main slate.

Suzuki will initially be facing Cincinnati rookie lefty Brandon Williamson. Since entering the Majors, Williamson has struggled, and his 5.26 SIERA certainly leaves room for improvement.

Against lefties, Suzuki's OPS is at .745 in 2023 (compared to .699 versus RHP). Also, Chicago does well to put the baseball in the air against southpaws. Through 107 games this year, the Cubs have a fly-ball rate of 39.6% when facing left-handed pitching -- that could translate into rampant home-run/scoring potential on a very warm night at Wrigley Field.

Brandon Belt, 1B, Toronto Blue Jays ($2,800)

Brandon Belt is enjoying his new surroundings with the Toronto Blue Jays. Through his first year in the American League, Belt is destroying right-handers for an OPS of .830, tallying 9 homers and 25 RBI.

Toronto is scheduled for a contest with the division rival Baltimore Orioles tonight. The O's will send rookie righty Grayson Rodriguez to the mound: a player who has pitched fewer than 65 innings in the Majors. So far, Rodriguez is allowing a 1.57 WHIP, which could lead to trouble inside the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre.

Whether at first base to give Vladimir Guerrero Jr. a day of rest or serving as designated hitter, Belt is almost always in the lineup against right-handed pitching. On Wednesday, Belt's projection -- per numberFire -- is at 11.5 points.

If you're looking to fill your 1B/C position with a low-salary option who offers nice upside, Belt checks a few boxes tonight.
