10 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Targets Heading Into Week 16
Week 15 is almost behind us, and the fantasy football playoffs roll on! If you advanced to the semifinals of your league, congratulations! Two more wins to go.
At this point in the season, the only matchup that matters is the one in front of you.
It goes without saying, but do everything you can to win this week. There is some value in planning for the finals if you can, but short-term production is the name of the game; if you have FAAB remaining, spend it. If you have a top waiver pick, use it. You can't take it with you if your team is eliminated.
With that in mind, here are some of the best additions you can make to your squads heading into Week 16.
10 Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Targets
Quarterbacks
Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers
If Baker Mayfield is available in your league and you need a signal caller for the semi-finals, he is my preferred option in Week 16.
Mayfield has been solid this season but went through a bit of a slump from Week 11 to Week 13, averaging fewer than 13.0 fantasy points per game in that stretch. Since then, he has turned things around, posting 20 fantasy points against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 14 and 29 against the Green Bay Packers last week.
Mayfield's Week 15 performance was his best of the season. On the road in Lambeau Field, Mayfield completed 22 of 28 pass attempts for 381 yards, 4 touchdowns, and no interceptions. It was a nearly flawless performance from the veteran.
Mayfield has now thrown for multiple passing touchdowns in 8 of his 14 starts this season. Despite his effective play, this was just the second time he has reached 300 passing yards in a game this year.
Next up for Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is a Week 16 clash with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville did a respectable job against Lamar Jackson in Week 15, but in the two weeks before that, they allowed big games to Joe Flacco and Jake Browning.
The stage is set for Mayfield to have another positive performance in Week 16.
Joe Flacco, Browns
Flacco was included in this piece last week and delivered against the Chicago Bears. It was an up-and-down game for Flacco, but he saved his day for fantasy football -- and real football -- with an excellent fourth quarter.
Flacco finished with 28 completions on 44 pass attempts for 374 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. He has now thrown for multiple touchdowns in all three of his starts this year and reached 300 passing yards in all of them.
The veteran continues to benefit from a high volume of pass attempts. Flacco is averaging 44.3 attempts per game since taking over as the Cleveland Browns' starter.
That could be the case again in Week 16 when Cleveland takes on the Houston Texans. Houston could get both C.J. Stroud and Nico Collins back for this one, which would help the Texans keep pace with an exceptional Browns' defense.
If Stroud and Collins remain out, there is some concern that the Browns could control this game and opt to lean on the run. Even if that is the case, Flacco could be efficient against a Texans pass defense that has struggled recently, most notably allowing Zach Wilson to throw for 301 yards in Week 14.
Others to Consider:
Gardner Minshew (at Atlanta), Nick Mullens (vs. Detroit), Derek Carr (at Los Angeles Rams), Jake Browning (at Pittsburgh), Tommy DeVito (at Philadelphia)
Running Backs
Ty Chandler, Vikings
With Alexander Mattison sidelined in Week 15, Ty Chandler stepped directly into a feature-back role. He played on 81% of the Minnesota Vikings' snaps and handled 82% of the carries with a 44% route participation and 12% target share. The result was 23 carries for 132 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown with 3 catches on 4 targets for 25 receiving yards.
Establishing a theme for the running back position on the waiver wire this week, Chandler's outlook in Week 16 will depend on the availability of the starter ahead of him. Chandler capitalized on his opportunity, but if Mattison is back in action next week, there will be uncertainty about Chandler's role.
Chandler played well enough that he could earn more touches moving forward even if Mattison does return, but it will be difficult to trust that without seeing it first. Mattison did not practice at all leading into Week 15, which indicates that he could also be sidelined in Week 16.
For now, Chandler needs to be added in leagues where he is still available. Week 16's matchup against the Lions isn't an easy one, Detroit just held Denver's running backs to 66 yards on 20 carries. That said, if Chandler retains his role from Week 15, he could still produce due to his volume of touches.
If Mattison remains out, Chandler will be in the RB2 conversation this week. If you have a bench spot and can afford to hold Chandler until we receive more information on Mattison's availability, do so. Don't allow your league members to do the same.
Jerick McKinnon and Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Chiefs
Jerick McKinnon and Clyde Edwards-Helaire both had productive days against the Patriots with Isiah Pacheco sidelined for the second week in a row.
Their roles remained similar to what they were in Week 14, but a lack of two-minute situations led to a higher snap share for Edwards-Helaire (61%) in Week 15. Neither running back was productive on the ground against a solid Patriots run defense, but both made an impact in the passing game. Edwards-Helaire finished with 4 receptions 6 targets for 64 yards and a touchdown while McKinnon caught all 3 of his targets for 19 yards and a touchdown.
Moving forward, the outlook for both running backs depends on the availability of Pacheco. Despite having a "clean up" surgery last week, the Kansas City Chiefs anticipate getting Pacheco back this week for their clash with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Still, Pacheco hasn't practiced in two weeks and most likely still has some hurdles to clear to be active in Week 16. Until we have a clear picture of Pacheco's status, both McKinnon and Edwards-Helaire need to be rostered in all leagues.
Zamir White, Raiders
Sticking with the theme, Zamir White was effective in Week 15 with Josh Jacobs sidelined with a quad injury.
As expected, White handled the majority of carries (65%) with Jacobs out, resulting in 17 rushing attempts for 69 yards and a touchdown. Surprisingly, White also led the way in the passing game, recording a higher route participation (65%) and target share (10%) than Ameer Abdullah.
White's passing-game involvement will be key to his outlook in Week 16 with the Raiders currently listed as 10.0-point underdogs against Kansas City, according to the NFL odds at FanDuel Sportsbook.
White's outlook for Week 16 is more uncertain than the outlook for the other running backs on this list because unlike Alexander Mattison and Isiah Pacheco, Josh Jacobs was listed as questionable for Week 15 instead of being ruled out. That could indicate that Jacobs is closer to returning than Matison or Pacheco, but he also did not practice last week.
While we wait for more news on Jacobs, White needs to be rostered in all leagues.
Others to Consider:
Justice Hill (at San Francisco), Tyler Allgeier (vs. Indianapolis), Chase Brown (at Pittsburgh), Isaiah Spiller (vs. Buffalo), Trey Sermon (at Atlanta),
Wide Receivers
Dontayvion Wicks, Packers
While all eyes have been on rookie Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks has been putting together an impressive rookie season of his own.
Wicks has been a part-time pass-catcher for Green Bay this season, with a 46% route participation mark, but when he's on the field, he is drawing targets. He is being targeted on 20% of his routes and has an 11% target share despite his limited opportunities.
In Week 15, Wicks set career-highs in route participation (76%) and target share (19%), resulting in 6 catches on 7 targets for 97 yards against the Buccaneers. Reed left the game with a toe injury, and his status for Week 16 is uncertain. With Christian Watson still dealing with a hamstring injury, Wicks could be in for an expanded role against the Panthers in Week 16.
Against Tampa Bay, Wicks finished with the same number of receptions as Reed with just one fewer target. Any additional volume would set him up for success against the Panthers in what will be a must-win for the Packers as they try to make the postseason.
If you add Wicks, monitor the status of both Watson and Reed closely throughout the week.
Noah Brown, Texans
Noah Brown delivered in a big way in Week 15, catching 8 of 11 targets for 82 yards and a touchdown to help the Houston Texans secure a crucial win over the Titans.
He finished the game with an 85% route participation and was targeted on an elite 32% of those routes, amassing a 32% target share. It was his third game with more than 20 PPR points this season.
Brown shouldn't be on the waiver wire in any leagues, but his outlook for Week 16 is clouded by two factors -- the potential return of Nico Collins and a matchup against an elite Browns' defense.
Still, C.J. Stroud has shown the ability to support multiple pass-catchers and is capable of elevating Houston's passing game to meet a difficult challenge.
That said, Brown is worth adding even if you plan to keep him on your bench this week. In Week 17, the Texans face the Titans again.
Even if you don't need help at wide receiver, consider adding Brown to play defense against your other league members.
Josh Downs, Colts
Michael Pittman Jr. left Week 15's game with a concussion and did not return. In his absence, Indianapolis spread the ball around, with five different players each seeing at least three targets.
Downs has had a strange rookie season. He started the campaign well, developing into a consistent option for Indianapolis, averaging five catches per game from Weeks 1-8. Since then, he has averaged just 2.8 receptions per game and has not totaled more than 43 yards or scored a touchdown.
If Pittman is unable to clear protocols in time, Downs will have an opportunity to return to his early-season form in Week 16 against the Falcons.
He is a risky option. His recent performances and Gardner Minshew's target distribution on Sunday don't point toward Downs being the go-to target even if Pittman is out. Still, Downs saw 13 targets as recently as Week 12 and ranks second on the Indianapolis Colts in targets this season with 84. The next closest pass-catcher, Alec Pierce, has 53.
It may not happen for Downs, but he is the only other pass-catcher on the Colts who has shown the ability to dominate targets this season.
Others to Consider:
Romeo Doubs (at Carolina), Jameson Williams (at Minnesota), Curtis Samuel (at New York Jets), Josh Palmer (vs. Buffalo), Rashid Shaheed (at Los Angeles Rams), Demario Douglas (at Denver), Alec Pierce (at Atlanta)
Tight Ends
Tucker Kraft, Packers
Since Luke Musgrave was placed on injured reserve entering Week 12, rookie Tucker Kraft has been operating in a full-time role on the Green Bay Packers' offense. Since Week 12, he is averaging 86% route participation, a 12% target share, and is being targeted on 13% of his routes.
The result is 13 catches on 18 targets for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Not elite by any means but good for an average of 10.6 fantasy points per game in PPR leagues.
In Week 15, Kraft posted season-high clips in route participation (93%) and target share (17%). In Week 16, the Packers face the Panthers and could be without both Christian Watson, who continues to deal with a hamstring injury, and Jayden Reed, who suffered a toe injury on Sunday.
If Musgrave and Watson remain out and Reed is forced to miss time, Kraft could be one of the top options for Jordan Love in Week 16.
Others to Consider:
Gerald Everett (vs. Buffalo), Chigoziem Okonkwo (vs. Seattle), Hunter Henry (at Denver), Cade Otton (vs. Jacksonville)
Defenses
Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos' D/ST struggled against the Detroit Lions in Week 14 but had been a much-improved unit entering that game. Denver allowing the Dolphins to score 70 points in Week 3 will be the lasting memory of the season for some, but since Week 6, the Broncos had not allowed more than 22 points in a game until facing Detroit last Saturday.
Over their last nine games, they are allowing just 18.9 points per contest. Sacks have also been there for Denver's defense. They have multiple sacks in six of their last seven games and are averaging 3.1 sacks per game over that stretch.
The one thing that hasn't been there for the Broncos is turnovers -- they have just two total across the past three games. Before that, they had 10 combined from Weeks 10 to 12.
A week 16 meeting with the New England Patriots can help them get back to producing turnovers. Bailey Zappe has three turnovers in four starts this season. The Patriots are tied for the ninth-most turnovers this season with 22.
Playing at home in Week 16 as 5.5-point favorites, the Broncos' D/ST could be in for a huge game against New England.
If Denver does well, they can also be trusted to capitalize on a Week 17 matchup against Easton Stick and the Los Angeles Chargers with fantasy championships on the line.
Even if you are all set on defense this week, consider adding the Broncos to play keep-away from your opponents. Every advantage matters this time of the year.
Others to Consider:
Packers D/ST (at Carolina), Seattle D/ST (at Tennessee), Los Angeles Rams D/ST (vs. New Orleans), Washington D/ST (at New York Jets)
