NHL Betting: How Many Awards Will the Hughes Brothers Take Home?

Brothers provide some of the best moments in sports history. The Mannings, the Currys, the Kelces make headlines all the time and garner interest. The NHL is no stranger to this throughout history, with the Richards, the Espositos and the Sedins all being legends of the game, to name a few.

The modern NHL has seen Quinn Hughes, Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes enter the league in the last few seasons. They were all drafted in top 7 in the NHL draft and expected to be great players. Each of them are off to great starts this season -- so much so that each of them could win a major award.

The NHL awards market on FanDuel Sportsbook has some fun ways we can wager on the Hughes' brothers cleaning up at the awards ceremony in June. Here the odds for two of the three, or all three, winning awards this season.

Awards
Odds
Jack to win Hart, Quinn to win Norris+1700
Jack to win Hart, Luke to win Calder+4000
Quinn to win Norris, Luke to win Calder+4500
Jack to win Hart, Quinn to win Norris, Luke to win Calder+10000

Now, let's look at their chances to win each award individually and see if any of these parlays make sense.

Jack Hughes to Win the Hart Trophy (+500)

Jack Hughes had his breakout season last year, scoring 43 goals (eighth in the NHL) and recording 99 points (12th).

It coincided with the New Jersey Devils not only making the playoffs but being one of the best teams in the NHL. They nearly won the Metropolitan Division and won a playoff round against the rival New York Rangers.

The Devils weren't going to sneak up on anyone this season. They were one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup this season, and many were already looking at Hughes as a potential MVP.

His start to the season has only increased the talk of him winning the award. He was leading the NHL in scoring at the time of his injury. He was averaging 2.0 points per game -- still the highest average in the league for anyone who's played more than 10 games.

Connor McDavid was the favorite to win this award entering the season as he did last year. He hasn't played like his dominant self to start the season, and with the Edmonton Oilers' struggling themselves, it would take a gargantuan effort for McDavid to win the award again.

He's still listed as the favorite currently with Auston Matthews the only other player with better odds than Hughes. Matthews is +450 and has been great to start the season, and he looks like Hughes' biggest competition at the moment.

There was good news on Hughes' injury; he could return as soon as Thursday. Matthews himself won the award while missing nine games in 2021-22, so the brief absence shouldn't hurt Hughes chances. If he plays as well as he was playing pre-injury, he should be among the favorites for the Hart Trophy.

Quinn Hughes to Win the Norris Trophy (+210)

The eldest Hughes brother was named the captain of the Vancouver Canucks during the summer, and both he and the team are off to incredible starts to the season.

Quinn finished tied for second in points by a defenseman last year. He only finished ninth in Norris Trophy voting -- largely because of the Canucks' weak overall team defense. They allowed the eighth-most goals per game in the league.

Things have been much different this season. Vancouver has been one of the pleasant surprises in the NHL this season. They have the second-best points percentage in the Western Conference and have the league's best goal differential (+33).

Hughes himself has been a large reason for this. Not only does he lead all defensemen in points, but he's also tied for third across the entire league.

His defensive impacts are also very solid. The Canucks allow 12.37 fewer shot attempts per 60 minutes with Hughes on the ice than when he's not on the ice. That's the best mark -- known as relative Corsi Against -- of any player in the NHL.

Hughes is currently the favorite for the Norris this season. His biggest competition will likely come from Cale Makar and Adam Fox, who are the next two listed in odds for this award. They each have won the award in the last three years but don't appear as likely this season. Makar is having a good but unspectacular start to the year, and Fox is currently on long-term injured reserve.

Quinn seems the most likely to win his award of the three brothers -- especially if he and the Canucks keep up their play.

Luke Hughes to Win the Calder Trophy (+1600)

Now, this is the award that feels like it's the biggest stretch for a Hughes to walk away with.

It's not because Luke Hughes hasn't played well. He's been okay with seven points in 13 games and is part of the Devils' power play, which is the best in the league. These numbers aren't eye-popping enough to make him a standout candidate.

Connor Bedard was the heavy favorite entering the season and has only made himself more of a favorite since the season began. He has 9 goals in 13 games -- elite numbers for any player, let alone a rookie.

It would take a huge drop off for (or an injury to) Bedard for Hughes to seriously be considered. Only four defensemen have won this award in the 18 years of the salary cap era.

If something did happen to Bedard, Luke could put himself in position to win the award, but that feels like a true longshot at this point.

Summary

Both Jack and Quinn are legitimate candidates to win the awards they are being considered for this season, so +1700 odds don't seem crazy -- especially if Jack returns from injury and plays like he was playing before he got hurt.

Still, as the odds would indicate, any of the parlays involving Luke don't feel like they have much of a chance of winning. It would be a great story if all three could win, but Luke is -- by far -- most likely the odd brother out.
