Let's check out the top options on today's main slate.
Pitchers
Kevin Gausman ($10,500)
At his lowest salary point since April, Gausman rates second in value and first overall with a 3.64 rating and a 38.3 FanDuel point projection against a Colorado Rockies' team with a .292 weighted on-base average (wOBA) and an appetizing 29.1% K-rate.
Through his most recent seven starts, Toronto's All-Star has provided consistent production throughout the second half of the season, recording a 3.41 expected Fielding Independent Pitching rating (xFIP), a 12.6% swinging strike rate, and seven or more strikeouts in 57% of these appearances.
In a juicy matchup versus six Rockies' hitters with K-rates over 28.2%, Gausman has the right spot to achieve his slate-high 7.47 strikeout projection despite pitching in a challenging setting at Coors Field.
George Kirby ($10,300)
Seattle's second-year starter will take take the mound on the road versus a New York Mets' offense with a 25.2% K-rate after producing 35.5 FanDuel points and 5.7 strikeouts per start in August.
As numberFire's second rated pitcher with a 31.9 FanDuel point projection, Kirby has an underrated spot to provide value at his median salary in the past four weeks against five New York hitters with strikeout percentages between 24.4% and 33.7%.
Tarik Skubal ($9,100)
After a 8.3% jump to his second highest salary point this season, Detroit's southpaw will make his 11th start against a Chicago White Sox's lineup with a weak .276 wOBA and a 23.2% K-rate this season against left-handed pitching.
While some may be unwilling to invest after his recent salary increase, Skubal easily profiles as an elite option on Sunday when evaluating his impressive 12.9% swinging strike percentage, effective splits against right-handed bats (2.46 xFIP, 33.1% K-rate), and stellar recent form in August (2.96 xFIP, 27.4% K-rate).
Stacks
Coming into Sunday afternoon in red hot form after producing 20 runs in the first two games of this series, Toronto's offense will take on a struggling Chase Anderson in baseball's best offensive environment.
Through 55.2 innings this season in a starting role, Anderson has easily graded as one of the worst among his position, accounting for a horrid 5.33 xFIP and a 16.8% K-rate while also allowing tons of production to right-handed bats (.358 wOBA, 5.53 xFIP).
With his main weakness in focus, most of Toronto's top hitters are in great position to attack Anderson's reverse splits including George Springer (.339 expected wOBA, 8.5% barrel rate), Davis Schneider (.422 expected wOBA, 18.4% barrel rate), and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (.379 expected wOBA, 11.3% barrel rate) while Brandon Belt (13.9% barrel rate) and Cavan Biggio (10.9% barrel rate) profile as secondary options with their power and batted ball metrics.
After breaking out of their recent offensive slump with nine runs on Saturday, the Red Sox should have another opportunity to exceed their expected run total against Zack Greinke and his glaring inability to get outs versus left-handed bats (12.9% K-rate, 4.74 xFIP, .394 wOBA).
To best capture Greinke's trouble versus the opposing side of the plate, main targets among Boston's lineup include Rafael Devers (27.0% fly-ball percentage, 12.3% barrel rate), Triston Casas (33.3% fly-ball percentage, 13.7% barrel rate), Alex Verdugo (.342 expected wOBA) and Masataka Yoshida (.330 expected wOBA, 41.6% hard hit rate).
In a matchup versus Johan Oviedo the Cardinals stand as Sunday's third rated offense with a 5.14 expected run total against right-hander with a poor 4.75 xFIP and overall inconsistent command (9.7% walk rate).
When analyzing his reliance on keeping the ball on the ground (44.8% percentage) and splits (4.97 xFIP, 12.5% walk rate versus LHH), ideal Cardinals' combinations should group together their top fly-ball or left-handed hitters including Paul Goldschmidt (25.5% fly-ball percentage), Nolan Gorman (37.9% fly-ball percentage), Nolan Arenado (25.8% fly-ball percentage), Tommy Edman (.263 expected average), and Lars Nootbaar (9.5% barrel rate, 20.5% fly-ball percentage).
