Stats Prove Angel Hernandez Screwed Phillies With Worst Call of Season on Sunday

Angel Hernandez is one of a handful of MLB umpires who consistently make headlines throughout the year after some egregious calls. That was no different on Sunday night when Hernandez rung up Kyle Schwarber on a 3-2 pitch that appeared well outside the zone.

In such a high-leverage moment, the call was truly unacceptable. Schwarber's reaction said it all and now statistical evidence backs up the Philadelphia Phillies' case for the worst umpiring performance of the MLB season so far.

According to Twitter page Umpire Auditor, Hernandez missed 19 calls on the night for just an 85.3% rating. This included calling six batters out on strike three for pitches outside the zone.

Bad umpiring is one thing, but to do so in the 9th inning of a one-run game is hard to watch.

Schwarber's strikeout was the most noteworthy, but a Jean Segura strike in the fifth inning rated even worse. This was an equally high-leverage situation as the Phillies had loaded the bases with one out in the inning, and brought their leadoff hitter to the plate.

Segura's strike can be seen on the below pitch chart, the one red dot furthest to the left in this graphic. That pitch was 6.47 inches out of the strike zone.

It was a tough night for the Phillies, who return to action on Monday night against the Colorado Rockies. Philadelphia enters this matchup as -200 moneyline favorites according to FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB Odds.
