Santa Anita Horse Racing Picks for Sunday 4/30/23

Updated:

The rebranded spring portion of Santa Anita's six-month racing season started on Friday, April 21 and runs through June 18 with a new moniker – the “Hollywood Meet."

April closes with 12 races at "The Great Race Place," including a Grade 3 stakes on Sunday. Post time is at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. local.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races after adjusting for track, distances, and conditions).

Santa Anita Betting

According to numberFire horse racing projections and Guaranteed Tip Sheet (GTS), these are some of the best bets to make at FanDuel Racing today.

Did you follow FanDuel Racing picks and cash in on the biggest longshot in a recent Allowance race at Keeneland? Longshot Time For Trouble (18/1) cashed $2 win bets for $37.50 and a $2 exacta paid $189. At Santa Anita, top pick Pequena Tormenta (2/1) won last week by 11 lengths, and the April 22 card at Santa Anita went 3-for-3 in winners including a pair of stakes races.

Race 6 is the $100,000 Santa Barbara Stakes for older fillies and mares going 1 1/2 miles on the downhill turf course. Trainer Mike McCarthy has two main win contenders according to Guaranteed Tip Sheet in Duvet Day (5/2) and Exit Soul (4/1). Queen Ofthe Temple (3/1) is also a top win contender, per GTS and numberFire's data.

Duvet Day has the meet's top jockey riding in Juan Hernandez. Top turf rider Umberto Rispoli is aboard Seisai (3/1) for trainer John Sadler.

2. Rhea Moon and Quattroelle, Race 8

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/2 and 2/1

Race 8 is the $100,000 Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes for older fillies and mares going 1 mile on the turf. The numberFire algorithm projects the favorite Quattroelle (2/1) to win breaking from the outside No. 7 post with Closing Remarks (3/1) and Rhea Moon (5/2) top challengers. Guaranteed Tip Sheet agrees with those three and has Rhea Moon on top with the meet's top jockey Juan Hernandez riding for EPO trainer Phil D'Amato.

Rhea Moon makes her 4-year-old debut coming off three straight wins, including a Grade 1 race. Closing Remarks has had troubled trips in a handful of races but still won a Grade 2 last time out as the favorite. Quattroelle has a wicked late kick, and the right pace and setup give her a great chance for her third straight graded stakes win in succession.

3. Stay in the Game and Super Chief, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 4/1 and 3/1

Race 9 is an Allowance race for Cal-breds going 6 1/2 furlongs. The numberFire data projects Stay in the Game (4/1) and My Bags Man (5/2) to duel down the stretch for the win. Guranteed Tip Sheet agrees and also adds Super Chief (3/1) on the rail as a top win contender and one to add to your exacta and trifecta bets.

Stay in the Game is a grinder and a 3-year-old facing older and tougher runners for the first time. Super Chief debuted last May in victory but has been on the shelf since. A blistering 4-furlong bullet work over this track a week ago has him ready for a big return.

Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.
