Printable Bracket for 2023 Men's Handball World Championship (Format & Schedule Explained)

32 national handball teams from countries around the world are gathering to play in the Men's Handball World Championship. 112 matches will be played over the course of the tournament.

Men's Handball World Championship Start Date & Location

The Tournament is set to begin on January 11, 2023 and games will be played in both Poland and Sweden.

Group Phase

The group phase will take place from Wednesday, January 11 and last through Tuesday, January 17th. Matches will be played in Krakow, Katowice, Gothenburg, Malmo, Kristianstad and Jonkoping.

Main Round

The main round will immediately follow the group phase, with matches running from Wednesday, January 18 through Monday, January 23. Matches here will be played at four of the locations used in the group phase: Krakow, Katowice, Gothenburg and Malmo.

Knockout Round

Teams will get a day off of rest between the main round and knockout stage, with the quarterfinals taking place on Wednesday, January 25, the semifinals taking place on Friday, January 27 and the finals on Sunday, January 29. Quarterfinals and semifinals matches will both be played in Gdansk and Stockholm, with Stockholm also hosting the finals.

President's Cup

The entire President's Cup will be played in Plock, running from Wednesday, January 18 Through Wednesday, January 25.

Men's Handball World Championship Format & Bracket

With 8 groups consisting of four countries each, the winner of the vent will automatically earn an Olympic bid to the Summer games in Paris in 2024.

After the group stage, the top three teams will move on to the next round based on a points system, similar to the soccer world cup. If two or more teams are tied for points, the tiebreakers are as follows – 1. head-to-head points, 2. head-to-head goal difference, 3. head-to-head number of goals scored, 4. goal difference.

The fourth-place team from each group is eliminated, but will still continue playing in the President's Cup bracket to determine their final rankings from 25-32.

The top three teams will face off in a similar round-robin to determine which two teams move on to the quarterfinals. A more traditional bracket for at will take over from that point.

With everything set to kick off on January 11, it will be interesting to see if Denmark can repeat as World champions or if another nation will walk away with the title in 2023.
