Image of Jim Brown in a Raiders' Uniform on Sports Illustrated Cover is a Strange Throwback
Updated:
Jim Brown is an NFL legend. Playing his entire nine-year NFL career with the Cleveland Browns, leading the NFL in rushing eight times and going down as one of the greatest running backs of all time.
But something fans might not remember is the brief, strange discussion of an NFL return when Brown was nearly 50 years old. The peak of the weirdness was when he was on the Sports Illustrated cover wearing a Raiders jersey.
The reason Brown considered returning was pure pettiness. Franco Harris was closing in on Brown's all-time rushing record, so after 17 years on the sidelines, Brown thought he might be able to defend it.
Thankfully for sports fans, a 47-year-old running back suiting up for the Raiders never did happen, and Harris never did eclipse Brown's all-time record. That stood until Walter Payton broke the record in 1984.
There have been plenty of cases of legends looking strange in new uniforms when they change teams late in their career, but this photo of Brown in a Raiders getup might top them all.
