Ian Anderson Unveils New Pitch in 2023
Updated:
The Atlanta Braves kick off their official Spring Training exhibition schedule on Saturday, Feb. 25 against the Boston Red Sox and the fanbase is excited, to say the least. This is a great opportunity to see which players made big strides throughout the offseason and which players could be in for a big year.
The Braves are certainly hoping for a better performance from starting pitcher Ian Anderson, who struggled with a 5.00 ERA across 22 starts. But, Anderson enters camp with a potential secret weapon for the 2023 campaign.
According to MLB insider Buster Olney, Anderson added a slide to his pitch repertoire. Anderson is mainly a fastball and changeup pitcher, tossing his 94-mph fastball approximately 48% of the time. He mixed in an 88-mph changeup on 33% of his pitches and throws the curveball 19% of the time.
Starting pitchers need at least three pitches, especially if they want to offer any sort of innings length to their performances. If Anderson can throw this fourth pitch (slider) effectively, he'll only set himself up for better success.
The early reports are positive as Olney indicated the Braves coaches are "encouraged by what they are seeing in his early spring work."
