Has Michigan Ever Won a National Championship?

Updated:

The 2021 NCAA college football season couldn't have gone better for the Michigan Wolverines. The No. 2 Wolverines went 12-1, capping things off with a Big Ten Championship victory led by Heisman Trophy finalist Aidan Hutchinson.

Now, Michigan is slated to face the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs in a College Football Playoff semifinal game as the Orange Bowl.

As of Friday, the Wolverines have the third-best odds (+700) to win this season's National Championship, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Has Michigan Ever Won a National Championship?

Nevertheless, would winning a championship be a new experience for Wolverines fans?

Michigan National Championship History

The Wolverines won a total of 16 National Championships (11 claimed, five unclaimed) from 1901 to 1997. With that being said, Michigan has never won a title under the modern format.

This year actually marks the first-ever time that Michigan has qualified for the College Football Playoff.

Even though the Wolverines are the No. 2 seed, they're the underdogs in their semifinal matchup against the Bulldogs. FanDuel Sportsbook is currently listing Michigan as the 7.5-point underdog ahead of Friday's contest.
