Has LSU Ever Won the Baseball College World Series? (Championship Wins, Appearances, History)
Updated:
The 2023 NCAA Baseball season has almost reached its conclusion. Only two teams remain in contention for a championship as the Florida Gators and LSU Tigers are set to battle it out in a three-game series starting on Saturday, June 24. Each side features its fair share of this year's best players.
As the Tigers prepare for an exciting clash, fans are wondering about the university's finals history. Here's everything you need to know about LSU's success in the College World Series all-time.
Have the LSU Tigers Ever Won the College World Series?
Yes, LSU has won the College World Series six times. It's a mark that ties for the second-most titles all-time alongside Texas. Those championships came in 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000 & 2009.
The Tigers road to five titles in a decade started when head coach Skip Bertman led his team to a 55-18 record in 1991. LSU went undefeated once NCAA regionals began as catcher Gary Hymel was named the Most Outstanding Player. Elite recruiting and coaching helped the Tigers stay dominant.
LSU endured a cold stretch following Bertman's retirement in 2001, but got a taste of glory in 2009 under head coach Paul Mainieri. The Tigers posted an impressive 56-17 record and took down Texas in three games to hoist the trophy. Outfielder Jared Mitchell was named Most Outstanding Player.
Current head coach Jay Johnson has to be hoping he can cement his name in the record books by leading another talented LSU group to a Championship. The Tigers have excelled all year long behind the likes of pitcher Paul Skenes (1.69 ERA) and outfielder Dylan Crews (.563 on-base percentage).
