Global sports fans are in for a treat as the 2022 European Championships are gearing up to get underway this week. The multi-sport event will feature plenty of exciting disciplines, well-known athletes and a strong number of European nations competing.

Here's everything you need to know about the 2022 European Championships.

What Are the 2022 European Championships?

The European Championships is a tournament featuring several nations competing in traditional Olympic events like gymnastics and rowing. It serves as a showcase event for some of the world's best athletes, who'll vie for bronze, silver and gold medals.

The first European Championships event was held in 2018 and co-hosted by the cities of Berlin and Glasgow. The tournament occurred from Aug. 2-12 and featured seven Olympic sports on display.

This year's event will see nine Olympic sports in the rotation. Beach Volleyball, Canoe Sprint, Sport Climbing and Table Tennis are among the new additions in 2022. There are 19 nations participating in this event as well.

2022 European Championships Munich Events

After featuring seven Olympic sports during the first iteration of this event in 2018, the 2022 edition ups that number to nine. They are: Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Canoe Sprint, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rowing, Sports Climbing, Tables Tennis and Triathlon.

There's numerous disciplines within some of these categories that will be part of the competition. Athletics includes events like marathon and shot put. Cycling not only encompasses road and track, but also BMX freestyle and mountain bike as well. In total, 177 gold medals are up for grabs.

2022 European Championships Munich Schedule

The 2022 European Championships is an 11-day event, starting on Thursday. Aug. 11 and going until Sunday, Aug. 21. The opening ceremony is slated to kick things off on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 18:30 CEST in OlympiaPark. You can find more info on the opening ceremony festivities here.

The sports action begins on Aug. 11. There's one medal competition that day for Artistic Gymnastics, while several other sports will hold preliminary events as well on Thursday.

The European Broadcasting Union will air the 202 European Championships via the Eurovision Network. Livestream and television coverage will vary based on regions.
