Darius Slay Suffers Potential Injury in Joint Practice vs. Dolphins

The Philadelphia Eagles started joint practices with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday prior to their preseason matchup on Saturday. One-on-one drills provided an insight into how these teams match up against one another, but it also caused a potential injury for Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay.

Slay was covering wide receiver Tyreek Hill on the first play of one-on-one drills. As he attempted to keep up with Hill's blazing speed along the sideline, Slay seemed to stumble and grab at his left toward the end of the play. He limped off the field before returning shortly after to try once again.

The nine-year pro was able to stay in for a few more snaps, but it was clear that he was not 100% healthy. Slay kept coming up gimpy and was eventually unable to finish the rest of practice. It remains to be seen if this is expected to be a minor issue or one that could cost the all-Pro talent some time.

The Eagles cannot afford to lose Slay for any kind of game action following a stellar 2021 season. He racked up 52 tackles (5.0 for loss), 9 pass breakups, 3 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries. Slay also allowed a career-best 10.7 yards per completion and only three touchdowns when targeted.

Saturday will be a big test for Slay. If he is able to suit up, all is well in the Eagles secondary. However, fans will have a right to worry about his status moving forward is he is forced to stay on the sideline. For now, Philadelphia has odds set at +2500 to win Super Bowl 57, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
