Braves Reveal Change to Ronald Acuna Jr.'s Stint in Venezuelan League
Updated:
It was revealed after the 2022 season that Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. would return to his native Venezuela to play winter ball. Acuna received permission from Atlanta to play in five games, all as DH, for Tiburones de la Guaira.
However, there's now been a tweak to the plans for Acuna's stint in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.
David O'Brien of The Athletic reports the three-time All-Star is being allowed to stick around in Venezuela. He'll play an additional five games at DH for Tiburones, extending his stay until the first week of December. Acuna is also set to participate in the Home Run Derby for the league on Monday.
There's always some worry about players getting injured in extracurricular activities, but letting Acuna continue to play in front of his home country will surely make him even happier to be part of Atlanta's organization. Acuna getting a few extra reps shouldn't hurt, either, especially since he's not playing in the field.
The right fielder admitted he was still impacted by his 2021 ACL tear when he returned to the lineup this season. It's a great sign he wants to get some additional live game reps in, and it could help his confidence heading into the 2023 campaign.
