3 Greatest Running Backs in Florida State History

Updated:

The Florida State Seminoles might be in the midst of a low point in their program's history, but that doesn't mean they still aren't one of college football's best programs historically. Formerly the crown jewel of the ACC during the 1990s and prior to Clemson's recent rise to dominance, Florida State has multiple National Championships and Heisman Trophy winners on its résumé, and you don't win national titles without great players.

The running game has long been important at Florida State, with some all-time talents coming through Tallahassee. With that in mind, let's take a look at the three best running backs in Florida State history.

3. Greg Allen (1981-1984)

Greg Allen ranks No. 3 on the Florida State all-time rushing list. He is also No. 2 in rushing touchdowns (44) and holds the school record for most rushing touchdowns in a season with 20 in 1982. Additionally, Allen is a member of the Seminoles Hall of Fame and was a Consensus First-team All-American in 1983. He also holds the record for most rushing yards in a single game, when he rushed for 322 yards in 1981 against Western Carolina.

2. Warrick Dunn (1993-96)

Warrick Dunn ranks No. 2 on the all-time rushing list at Florida State with 3,959 yards. He has the third-most touchdowns (37). Three of his four seasons in Tallahassee rank in the top-10 for most rushing yards in a season, with his 1995 performance being the third-most with 1,242. Dunn was part of the 1993 National Championship team and made First-team All-ACC three times. He also was Second-team All-American in 1995, and Dunn's FSU teams won four ACC titles with a combined 43-5-1 (W-L-T) record.

1. Dalvin Cook (2014-2016)

Dalvin Cook grabs the No. 1 spot here and for good reason. He leads the Seminoles in career rushing yards (4,464) and career rushing touchdowns (46). His 2015 and 2016 seasons were the two highest single-season rushing totals in school history and he has four different games appear in the top-10 single-game rushing performances in FSU history. He was a two-time First-team All-American (2015-16), a two-time First-team All-ACC (2015-16) and one Second-team All-ACC as a freshman in 2014. But the real kicker here is that he was able to accomplish all of this in just three years at FSU.
