Memorial Tournament Field and Course
Muirfield Village Golf Club is known as Jack's Place, as the Nicklaus-designed masterpiece has been a regular stop on Tour since 1976. This is the third edition since the course's second renovation in 2020.
All of the OWGR top-six players are set to tee it up this week: Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland.
Penal rough plus firm and fast bentgrass greens make hitting fairways and strong approach play and around-the-green strength imperative to contend for the title. With added length to 7,571 yards, bigger hitters have an edge and par 5 scoring is where the birdies lie with every par 4 playing to an over-par average in 2022. The toughest holes are 10, 17 and 18, making for difficult scoring on the back 9.
Memorial Picks & Predictions
More than 50% of approach shots in the 2022 event came from beyond 175 yards. Of the top players that have long iron strength and proximity to hole edges from 175+ yards, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm are at the top along with Viktor Hovland, Scotti Scheffler and Collin Morikawa. McIlroy's elite driving skills and distance (No. 1 on Tour) make him a logical pick to contend this week with odds twice those of Rahm.
The Big 3 are also Par 5 scoring leaders and efficiency strength along with Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, who is tops at Muirfield Village GC. Same for Par 4 efficiency at Muirfield, and the favorites and leading contenders seem to have an edge in the setup this week as well.
McIlroy has four top-10s in this event plus two top-20 finishes the last two years on the renovated course with new greens. Two over-par rounds on the weekend in 2022 kept him from a higher finish, but this course is ideal for Rory with room off the tee as well as a premium on approach play.
Pick: Rory McIlroy to Win (+1400) and/or Finish Top 10 (+140)
