WNBA Best Bets

Los Angeles Sparks at New York Liberty

Sparks +13.5 (-108)

The Los Angeles Sparks and New York Liberty face off for the second time in three days on Saturday afternoon. Despite missing both Courtney Vandersloot and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton due to various injuries, the Liberty came out on top in Thursday's matchup, 93-80.

The Sparks did cover the 15-point spread, continuing New York's ongoing struggle to cover at home. Despite a 7-1 home record, the Liberty are just 1-7 against the spread at home, according to numberFire's database.

We don't have a status update on Vandersloot or Laney-Hamilton, but I'm not expecting either to be rushed back with the Commissioner's Cup Final next week.

Without those two, the Sparks are in another nice spot to cover the spread.

It's a small sample, but the Liberty have been outscored by 2.3 points per 100 possessions with those two off the floor this season. New York has only shot 30.4% from three, while their opponents have shot 41.7% in that sample.

That's unsustainable, but their 97.7 offensive rating speaks to how important their backcourt is.

They did put up 93 points against L.A. on Thursday, but that came largely thanks to a 13-for-33 performance from three.

The Sparks only shot 7-of-19 from distance, and they missed eight free throws. That didn't stop them from putting a respectable 80 points on the W's fourth-rated defense -- even with their two leading scorers, Dearica Hamby and Rickea Jackson, failing to crack double-digit points.

New York should (and likely will) win this game, but the Sparks showed on Thursday they aren't a pushover. They proved capable of covering this line despite poor showings from their top two scorers, so I like them to cover yet again on Saturday.

Phoenix Mercury at Minnesota Lynx

Mercury +5.5 (-112)
Brittney Griner To Score 20+ Points (-106)

By any metric, the Minnesota Lynx have been one of the top teams in the W this season. They're top three in offensive and defensive rating, culminating in the league's second-best net rating (+12.6) and third-best record (12-3).

That's played a role in their league-leading 11-4 record against the spread.

But, the Phoenix Mercury are in town tonight, and they've looked the part of an upper-echelon team since Brittney Griner returned. Given their strong recent play, the Mercury well-positioned to cover as 5.5-point underdogs.

Phoenix is 5-0 against the spread since Griner's debut. They have a +8.4 net rating over that span, winning four of five games outright.

That includes an earlier matchup with the Lynx -- one the Mercury won 81-80. Phoenix won the rebounding battle (39-36) and held the Lynx to 38.9% shooting in that one. They withstood Minnesota shooting 15-for-34 from three by dominating the paint points, 34 to 18.

While Griner only played 21 minutes in her first game back, she scored 11 points and finished +13 from the floor.

Phoenix has since taken the training wheels off with Griner putting up 24.0 points and 7.3 rebounds across 33.3 minutes per game. She's cracked 20 points in three of her last four, so we can look for her to score 20+ points at -106 odds.

Griner only scored 20+ points in 12 of 31 games last season, but we've seen her shot attempts jump to 13.4 per game in 2024. Notably, Griner has already attempted four threes in five games -- well on pace to shatter her previous career-high of nine.

At the time of this posting, a Same Game Parlay featuring the Mercury to cover +5.5 and Brittney Griner to Score 20+ Points comes out to +192 odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
