When Will Mike Trout Return Return From Injury?
The All-Star Break has arrived, which means we've reached the halfway point of the 2023 MLB season.
That seems like a good time to check in on some injured stars -- focusing on Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout.
Injury Update
Mike Trout (wrist) will be out until at least August after undergoing surgery to repair his broken hamate bone.
Mike Trout just addressed the media. He was wearing a cast on his left hand and said the surgery went well. Timeline hasn’t changed. Still 4-8 weeks. But he won’t attend the All-Star Game this year.

Trout suffered the injury on July 3rd during an at-bat against the San Diego Padres. According to Trout, there was no way to prevent the injury, rather it was a "freak thing" but thankfully "not crazy serious or season-ending." The Angels put Trout on the 10-day IL the following day.

Trout was given a four-to-eight-week timetable after surgery. That would put him on pace to return at some point during August or early September. So far, there isn't any indication this will be a season-ending injury.
Injury Prognosis
Surgery was performed to remove the fragmented piece of bone from the wrist. It's not an uncommon injury for baseball players, but it's certainly a head-scratching one given that Trout was just swinging at a pitch.
This is the same injury that Jose Ramirez suffered in 2019 and that Giancarlo Stanton went through in 2015. Ramirez suffered the injury on August 24th, had surgery, and hit two home runs in his first game back on September 24th. Stanton, meanwhile, suffered his injury on June 26th and did not appear in another game that season.
Clearly, there isn't one set timetable for a player to return. We could see Trout back in action as soon as the first week of August or as late as next March. Much of that could depend on how the Angels play without him. If things go south for the Halos, Trout may not be back.
Angels Odds
As it currently stands, the Angels have slim to no chance of taking the division, per the AL West odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
Team | Odds |
---|---|
Texas Rangers | -110 |
Houston Astros | +100 |
Seattle Mariners | +1300 |
Los Angeles Angels | +3500 |
Oakland Athletics | +25000 |
As a result, the Angels don't have good odds to make the playoffs (+870), and they're more than a longshot to win the World Series (+8000).
