Updated:

Tennis fans are buzzing with excitement as the Wimbledon Championships prepare to kick off. One aspect of this prestigious event that can go under the radar is the ball boys and girls who help matches run smoothly.

With that in mind, here's everything you need to know about these helpers.

Wimbledon Ball Boys and Girls Selection Process and Age

According to Wimbledon, around 250 ball boys and girls are selected to work the event every year, though they often receive upwards of 1,000 total applications.

The average age of Wimbledon ball boys and girls is 15 years old, with 170 participants being from either Year 9 or 10, which is eighth or ninth grade in the United States. The remaining 80 or so helpers are picked from the previous Wimbledon ball boy and girl classes.

Wimbledon Ball Boys and Girls Training

The ball boys and girls selected to work Wimbledon participate in extensive training before the championships. The sessions begin once every two weeks starting in February and go until mid-June.

It's estimated the ball boys and girls train for 2-2.5 hours per session with 50-60 children going at a time.

Wimbledon Ball Boys and Girls Salary

Wimbledon does not list the official salary for ball boys and girls. However, given their age, it's said the helpers instead receive a stipend for their service. In 2015, The Daily Mail stated that pay was around £200 per week.
