The 2023 French Open is preparing to start this weekend, and the entire tennis community is buzzing ahead of the Grand Slam tournament. The world's best players will battle it out for the chance to add a major title to their résumé and some serious hardware to their trophy case.
With that in mind, here's everything you need to know about the trophies for the winners of the French Open.
What is the French Open Singles Trophy Called?
Trophies have been handed out to the winners of the French Open since 1953. This hardware is made of pure silver and is crafted by the famous French jewelry house Mellerio dits Meller.
The trophy given to the winner of the men's singles tournament at the French Open is called the Coupe des Mousquetaires, or "The Musketeers' Cup". It's named after the Four Musketeers of French tennis -- Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet and René Lacoste -- who put together a memorable run during the 1920s and '30s that included 20 Grand Slam singles titles.
The Musketeers' Cup stands 40 cm high and 19 cm wide. It also weighs 14 kg, which is nearly 31 pounds. The winner of the singles tournament gets their name etched into the trophy, but the original remains in possession of the French Tennis Federation. However, the victor does receive a small replica trophy that is theirs to keep.
The trophy handed out to the winner of the women's singles tournament is the Suzanne Lenglen Cup. This hardware is a near-exact replica of the cup the city of Nice gave to Lenglen, who became a French legend after winning eight Grand Slam singles titles, including two at Rolland Garros.
The winner of the women's singles tournament receives a small replica of the Suzanne Lenglen Cup, which remains in possession of the French Tennis Federation.
