VIDEO: Remembering When Michael Barrett Punched A.J. Pierzynski in the Face to Ignite Insane Cubs-White Sox Brawl
Updated:
There are baseball skirmishes and there are downright brawls, and this memorable Chicago throw down between the Cubs and White Sox was as rough as they come.
The carnage between the crosstown rivals all began when A.J. Pierzynski bull-rushed fellow catcher Michael Barrett on a sacrifice fly attempt. Barrett took such an exception to the hit that he decided to give one in return, landing a right hook into Pierzynski's jaw.
As you can imagine, Barrett was immediately mobbed by White Sox players, including on-deck batter Scott Podsednik. Both benches clear in seconds as White Sox and Cubs both take swings at each other. Rarely do you see haymakers landed on camera like in this one, with Barrett's sucker punch leading the way.
This may not be a great example for the kids out there, but this type of intensity is incredible for baseball. The sport is a long and sometimes exhausting marathon throughout summer, but action like this can spark even the casual fan's interest.
