VIDEO: Alex Bregman's High School Highlights are a Great Throwback
Updated:
Alex Bregman is now one of baseball's biggest stars. After a huge season where he finished runner-up in AL MVP voting, he's now posted an impressive career OPS of .911 through his first four seasons.
However, Bregman was once a high school baseball star at Albuquerque Academy. As a junior in high school, he batted .678 and set a New Mexico state record with 19 home runs, mostly while playing catcher. His highlight reel shows his sweet swing and power ability were there from the beginning.
Bregman was touted as a top high school prospect, but he hurt his knuckle on a ground ball and went undrafted until the 29th round by the Boston Red Sox. He chose to go to LSU to play college baseball, where he was named the country's best college shortstop in 2013. After a sterling college career, he was selected No. 2 overall by the Houston Astros.
After just a year in the minors, Bregman had proved he could hit and got the promotion to the major leagues, where he's been a mainstay at third base ever since.
Bregman's immense success has helped the Astros to a World Series title in 2017 and another appearance in 2019, though the first has been marred by the sign-stealing scandal that broke during the 2019 offseason. Bregman will still have something to prove in 2020 as he searches for an MVP and to dispel any conjecture that the sign-stealing fueled his success.
